Diagnosis
When an APEC ROES-50 completely stops producing water and the storage tank is empty, the system has likely entered a "stalled" state where the osmotic pressure cannot overcome the back-pressure of the system, or the automatic shut-off valve (ASO) is stuck in the closed position. This usually happens because the membrane has become fouled or the pre-filters are clogged, preventing enough water from reaching the membrane to create the pressure differential needed to push water into the tank. Another common culprit is a failed Automatic Shut-Off Valve (ASO). This four-way valve is designed to stop the flow of water once the storage tank reaches its maximum pressure (typically around 30-40 PSI when full). If the internal diaphragm in the ASO ruptures or becomes jammed, it may signal the system to stop producing water even when the tank is empty. You can confirm this by checking the drain line; if the system is not producing water but the drain line is bone dry (no constant trickle), the ASO is likely blocking the feed water entirely. Conversely, if the drain line is running constantly but the tank is empty, the membrane is likely fouled or bypassed.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to restore water production and reset the system pressure:
- Verify Tank Valve Position: Locate the blue plastic valve on top of the storage tank. Ensure the handle is turned exactly parallel to the tubing. If it is perpendicular, the tank is isolated and the system will stop producing water once it hits the internal pressure limit.
- Perform a Manual Pressure Reset: Close the cold water supply valve (the small valve connecting your home plumbing to the RO system). Open the RO faucet on your sink and leave it open for 30 seconds to bleed off any trapped air or residual pressure.
- Check Pre-Filter Differential: Remove the three pre-filter housings (Sediment, Carbon, and Carbon). If the housings are difficult to unscrew or the filters look dark brown/black, they are restricting flow. Replace these immediately using standard 10-inch filters.
- Test the ASO Valve: Locate the small square plastic block where four tubes meet. This is the ASO valve. Gently tap the side of the valve with the handle of a screwdriver. If water begins to flow into the system, the diaphragm was stuck.
- Re-pressurize the System: Slowly open the cold water supply valve. Listen for the "hiss" of water entering the membrane. Leave the RO faucet open for 2 minutes to flush any air pockets before closing it to allow the tank to refill.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the Membrane Seal: The RO membrane (the large bottom housing) may have a shifted O-ring or a collapsed brine seal. Unscrew the membrane housing, pull the membrane out slightly, and push it back in firmly to ensure it is seated deep in the socket. If the membrane is more than 24 months old, the pores are likely clogged with mineral scale, and you must replace the membrane element.
- Inspect the Check Valve: There is a small one-way check valve located where the membrane housing connects to the output line. If this valve fails, water will leak back from the tank into the membrane, preventing the system from ever reaching the pressure required to shut off. Replace the check valve fitting if you hear water "sloshing" back toward the membrane.
- Verify Home Water Pressure: Use a pressure gauge on your main line. The ROES-50 requires a minimum of 40 PSI to operate efficiently. If your home pressure has dropped below 35 PSI, the system cannot overcome the air bladder pressure in the storage tank. In this case, you will need to install a permeate pump or a booster pump.
- Test the Tank Bladder: Lift the storage tank. If it feels heavy (full of water) but no water comes out of the faucet, the internal bladder has ruptured. Use a tire gauge to check the air valve (Schrader valve) at the bottom of the tank. It should read 7-10 PSI when the tank is empty. If water squirts out of the air valve, the tank is dead and must be replaced.

- Filter Schedule: Replace the three pre-filters every 6 months to prevent the RO membrane from fouling, which is the #1 cause of production stoppage.
- Sanitization: Whenever you open the membrane housing, wipe the interior with a mild bleach solution to prevent biofilm buildup from clogging the ASO valve.
- Leak Detection: After any repair, wrap a dry paper towel around the ASO valve and check-valve fittings for 10 minutes to ensure there are no micro-leaks.
- Avoid Kinks: Ensure the tubing leading to the ASO valve is not pinched or bent at a sharp 90-degree angle, as this restricts flow and triggers premature shut-off.
