DIAGNOSIS Phantom paper jams are often caused by a tiny piece of paper torn off in the path, a faulty sensor flag that's stuck, or sometimes even a low/defective toner cartridge triggering an error.
FIX Do a full clearance. Unplug the printer. Open the rear cover (the one that folds down at the back) and look up inside near the rollers. Shine a flashlight. Then, open the front, remove the toner and drum, and check the whole path. Manually rotate any white rollers you see to feel for resistance. Reassemble and plug in.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK A sensor might be held open. With power off, gently press and release every little plastic lever or flap you can see inside the paper path (especially near the rear and inside the front). Something might be stuck in the "paper present" position.
HEADS UP The duplex unit (for double-sided printing) is a prime suspect for false jams. If you have it installed, pull it out completely, inspect it, and re-seat it firmly. A slightly misaligned duplex unit will throw a jam error immediately.
