Diagnosis
The grinding or scraping sound during oscillation on the Dyson TP07 is typically caused by an obstruction in the oscillation gear assembly or a misalignment of the loop amplifier's base pivot. Because the TP07 uses a motorized gear system to rotate the loop, even a small amount of foreign debris—such as a clump of pet hair, a stray piece of plastic packaging, or a buildup of hardened dust—can get lodged between the drive gear and the rotating chassis. This creates a physical friction point that sounds like plastic scraping against plastic every time the unit reaches a certain angle of its arc. In more severe cases, the issue is caused by "gear slip" or a worn-out nylon gear within the base. If the unit was accidentally pushed or forced to rotate manually while powered off, the internal teeth of the oscillation gear may have jumped a track or sustained a chip. You can confirm this by turning off the oscillation via the remote and then gently attempting to move the loop by hand; if you feel a distinct "click" or a hard stop before the full range of motion is reached, there is a mechanical obstruction or a damaged gear tooth in the base assembly.
How to Fix It
To resolve the scraping noise and clear the mechanism, follow these precise steps:
- Power down the unit completely and unplug the power cable from the wall outlet to prevent accidental activation of the motor.
- Carefully lift the loop amplifier (the large ring) slightly upward to create a small gap between the ring and the base pedestal. Do not pull with extreme force, as you may damage the electrical contact pins.
- Use a high-powered vacuum with a narrow crevice tool attachment. Insert the nozzle into the gap where the loop meets the base, specifically focusing on the left and right sides where the oscillation pivot resides.
- While vacuuming, slowly rotate the loop amplifier manually through its full 90-degree range of motion. This helps dislodge debris that may be trapped deep within the gear teeth.
- Use a can of compressed air (held upright to avoid liquid discharge) to blow short, sharp bursts into the gear housing at the base of the neck. This clears out micro-debris that the vacuum cannot reach.
- Wipe the exterior pivot point with a dry microfiber cloth to ensure no external grit is interfering with the rotation.
- Plug the unit back in and test the oscillation at the lowest speed setting first to ensure the noise has subsided.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Base Leveling: Ensure the TP07 is on a completely flat, hard surface. If the unit is on a thick rug or uneven flooring, the base can tilt slightly, causing the internal oscillation arm to rub against the plastic housing. Move the unit to a hardwood or tile floor to see if the noise disappears.
- Reset the Oscillation Calibration: Sometimes the software loses track of the "home" position. Turn the unit off, manually center the loop, and then power it on. Immediately activate the oscillation. This can sometimes force the gears to re-seat themselves into the correct groove.
- Inspect for External Obstructions: Check the perimeter of the machine. Often, the "scraping" sound isn't internal, but is the loop amplifier hitting a nearby wall, piece of furniture, or a curtain that has drifted into its path of rotation.
- Internal Gear Lubrication: If the noise persists and sounds like a "dry" squeak, the factory lubricant on the nylon gears may have dried out. While the unit is not designed to be serviced, a tiny amount of dry PTFE (Teflon) spray applied to the visible pivot point can sometimes migrate down to the gears and silence the friction. Do not use WD-40, as it can degrade the plastic.

- Never force the loop amplifier to rotate manually while the machine is plugged in and powered on, as this can strip the nylon gears permanently.
- Avoid placing the unit in high-dust areas (like directly next to a bedroom dresser) without cleaning the base every 3 months; dust accumulation in the pivot is the primary cause of motor strain.
- If the grinding is accompanied by a "clicking" sound and the loop stops moving entirely, the internal drive belt or gear has likely failed, requiring a professional replacement of the base motor assembly.
- Always ensure the filter is seated correctly; an improperly installed filter can occasionally cause the chassis to vibrate, which can be mistaken for an oscillation noise.
