Expected operational heat. The Mediatek MT8696 processor generates significant heat during 4K HDR decoding. The aluminum heat spreader is designed to feel warm.
How to Fix It
Ensure optimal heat dissipation. Step 1: Use the included HDMI extender. It provides air gap and prevents the stick from being trapped in a confined space behind the TV. Step 2: Verify nothing is blocking the vents on the stick's body. Do not wrap it in decorative skins or cases. Step 3: Check the ambient temperature. If the TV's HDMI cluster is in a closed cabinet, provide ventilation.
If That Didn't Work
Excessive heat causing throttling or shutdowns indicates a power issue. Replace the power adapter and cable with the official Amazon ones. Third-party adapters often supply unstable voltage, causing the voltage regulator to overwork and overheat.
Heads Up
The device has thermal protection. If it overheats, you will see a performance slowdown (stuttering video) followed by an automatic shutdown. If it is hot but operating normally, it is within specification. Concern is only warranted if you experience these shutdowns.
