The Molekule Air Pro utilizes a dual-stage filtration system consisting of a washable pre-filter and a proprietary PECO (Photo Electrochemical Oxidation) filter. Over time, the pre-filter—the gray mesh screen—accumulates a layer of "matting" consisting of pet dander, large dust particles, and hair. If this layer isn't removed, airflow is restricted, which forces the fan to run at higher RPMs, increasing noise levels and potentially overheating the motor. You can confirm your unit needs cleaning if you notice a visible gray film on the mesh or if the "Filter" indicator light on the control panel is flashing. More importantly, if you hear a high-pitched whistling sound during operation, it is a sign that the pre-filter is clogged, creating a vacuum effect that stresses the internal components. It is critical to understand that while the pre-filter is washable, the PECO filter itself is a complex electronic component that must never touch water.
How to Fix It
Follow these exact steps to clean your Molekule Air Pro without damaging the sensitive electronics:
- Power down the unit completely and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet to prevent any electrical shorts during the cleaning process.
- Open the front chassis door. Gently grip the PECO filter (the large rectangular core) and pull it straight out of the housing. Set this aside in a clean, dry area.
- Locate the gray mesh pre-filter. This is the thin, fabric-like sheet adhered to the frame. Carefully peel the mesh away from the plastic edges. Be mindful not to tear the fabric, as any holes will allow large debris to hit the PECO core.
- Rinse the pre-filter under lukewarm running water. Use a soft-bristled brush or a gentle stream of water to push the dust particles off the mesh. Avoid using harsh detergents or bleach, as these can break down the synthetic fibers of the filter.
- Pat the mesh dry with a lint-free towel and allow it to air dry completely. It must be 100% dry before reinstallation; installing a damp pre-filter can lead to mold growth inside the chassis or cause a short in the PECO filter.
- Re-adhere the clean mesh to the frame and slide the PECO filter back into the unit, ensuring it clicks firmly into place.
- Close the door and plug the unit back in.
If That Didn't Work
- If the unit continues to smell musty after cleaning the pre-filter, the PECO filter may have reached the end of its operational lifespan. Check the filter's date code; if it has been in use for more than 12 months, it requires a full replacement rather than a cleaning.
- If you notice dust accumulating on the exterior of the unit or around the air intake vents, use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment on the lowest suction setting to clear the perimeter of the chassis. This prevents new dust from being pulled immediately back into the clean pre-filter.
- For stubborn odors that persist after cleaning, place the unit in a room with open windows and run it on "High" for two hours. This flushes the internal chamber of any stagnant air trapped behind the filter assembly.
- If the "Filter" light remains on after cleaning, perform a hard reset by unplugging the device for 60 seconds and then plugging it back in, or use the specific filter reset button sequence found on the control panel to calibrate the timer.

- NEVER attempt to wash, scrub, or spray water directly onto the PECO filter. The PECO core contains a catalyst coating and electronic elements that will be permanently destroyed if they get wet.
- Clean the pre-filter every 30 to 60 days depending on your environment. If you have pets or live in a high-dust area, a 30-day cycle is mandatory to maintain the motor's longevity.
- Avoid using compressed air cans to blow out the filters. The high pressure can create microscopic tears in the pre-filter mesh or dislodge the catalyst material on the PECO core.
- Always ensure the PECO filter is seated flush against the back of the housing. An improperly seated filter allows "air bypass," where unfiltered air leaks around the sides, rendering the purification process ineffective.
