Diagnosis
The DeWalt DCS354B is a high-vibration tool, which means sawdust doesn't just sit on the surface; it migrates into the internal housing via the cooling vents and the gaps around the variable speed dial. When fine particulate matter (especially from MDF or pressure-treated lumber) accumulates, it creates a "blanket" over the motor windings. This prevents the internal fan from effectively dissipating heat, which can lead to thermal shutdown or, in extreme cases, permanent motor burnout. Furthermore, dust ingress into the trigger mechanism and the speed dial can cause "ghosting" or erratic speed fluctuations. If you notice the tool sounding strained or if the chassis feels excessively hot to the touch after only a few minutes of use, you have a significant dust buildup blocking the airflow. The most critical areas of failure are the intake vents located near the battery terminal and the oscillating pivot point where debris can grind against the drive shaft.
How to Fix It
To thoroughly clean the DCS354B without damaging the internal electronics, follow this sequence:
- Power Down: Remove the 20V Max battery immediately. Never use compressed air or brushes while the battery is engaged to avoid accidental trigger pulls.
- Surface Debris Removal: Use a 1-inch stiff-bristle nylon brush or a clean paintbrush to scrub the exterior housing. Pay special attention to the recessed grooves around the variable speed dial and the crevices of the trigger switch.
- Vent Clearing: Locate the air intake vents at the rear of the tool. Use a vacuum with a narrow crevice tool to suck out the bulk of the dust first. This prevents you from simply pushing the dust deeper into the motor when you switch to compressed air.
- Internal Blow-out: Using a compressor set to no more than 30 PSI (or a can of duster), blow air through the vents in the opposite direction of the natural airflow. Aim the nozzle specifically at the motor housing and the area surrounding the trigger assembly.
- Blade Clamp Maintenance: Open the quick-release lever and remove any installed blades. Use a small pick or a toothbrush to clear the sawdust from the clamping mechanism and the drive pin. If the lever feels "gritty," apply a tiny drop of dry PTFE lubricant—avoid wet oils, as they attract more dust.
- Final Wipe: Use a damp (not dripping) microfiber cloth with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to wipe the exterior plastic, removing the sticky resin residue often left behind by treated woods.
If That Didn't Work
- Deep Dial Cleaning: If the speed dial is still sticking, use a can of electronic contact cleaner. Spray a small amount into the gap around the dial, rotate the dial from minimum to maximum ten times rapidly to scrub the internal potentiometers, and let it dry for 10 minutes before reinserting the battery.
- Vent Mesh Inspection: If you see "caked" dust that won't budge with air, use a plastic toothpick or a sewing needle to gently pick away the hardened clumps from the vent slats. Be careful not to puncture the internal plastic fan shroud.
- Battery Terminal Cleaning: If the tool is flickering or losing power, the dust has likely entered the battery rails. Use a cotton swab dipped in 90% isopropyl alcohol to clean the gold-plated contact pins inside the tool's battery port.
- Professional Bearing Service: If the tool is making a grinding noise despite a clean exterior, the dust has likely bypassed the seals and entered the oscillation bearings. This requires a full teardown and regreasing, which is best handled by a certified DeWalt service center to maintain the warranty.

- Avoid Liquid Cleaners: Never use soap and water or household cleaners on the tool; these can seep into the motor and cause corrosion or short circuits.
- Compressed Air Warning: Do not hold a high-pressure compressor nozzle directly against the motor vents for too long, as this can actually spin the motor backward and generate an electrical current that may damage the control board.
