During the shipping and handling process, the vibration and movement cause tiny particles of this carbon to rub against each other, breaking off microscopic fragments. When you first install the filters, these loose particles sit on the surface and within the upper pores of the element. If the filters are not thoroughly flushed and primed, the initial gallons of water push these fines through the housing and into the upper chamber, resulting in a cloudy appearance or visible black grit in your drinking water. This is a physical phenomenon, not a chemical failure or a sign of a defective filter; the carbon itself is food-grade and non-toxic, but it affects the aesthetic quality of the water.
How to Fix It
To eliminate carbon fines and ensure the BK4X2 is operating at peak efficiency, you must perform a deep prime and a double-flush of the system. Follow these exact steps:
- Remove the filter elements from the stainless steel posts.
- Fill a clean basin or plastic bucket with lukewarm water.
- Submerge each filter element completely. While underwater, vigorously shake the element and move it up and down in a pumping motion for 60 to 90 seconds. This forces air bubbles out of the dense carbon core and dislodges trapped fines.
- Reinstall the elements into the BK4X2 housings, ensuring the rubber gaskets are seated perfectly flush against the holes to prevent leaks.
- Fill the upper chamber to the brim with water. Let it drip through completely into the lower chamber. Do not drink this first batch of water.
- Empty the lower chamber entirely.
- Repeat the filling and draining process a second time. This second "break-in" cycle ensures that any remaining surface dust is washed away before the water reaches your glass.
If That Didn't Work
If you still see specks after two full flushes, try these advanced recovery methods:
- The High-Pressure Rinse: Remove the filters again and hold them under a high-pressure faucet stream for 30 seconds on each side. This mechanical force can knock loose larger clusters of carbon fines that are clinging to the exterior shell of the element.

- Gasket Inspection: Check the black rubber washers. If they are pinched or improperly seated, they can sometimes shed small bits of rubber or allow unfiltered water to bypass the element, bringing sediment with it. Re-seat the washers and tighten the wing nuts firmly.
