The Brita Hub utilizes an internal flash-heating element designed to raise water temperature rapidly as it flows through the heating chamber. When the machine is set to 190°F but outputs lukewarm water, it typically indicates a failure in the thermal regulation loop or an accumulation of mineral scale (calcium and magnesium) on the heating coils. Scale acts as an insulator, preventing the heat from transferring efficiently from the element to the water stream, even if the sensor believes the target temperature has been reached. Another common cause is an air lock within the internal plumbing or a partially clogged filter. If the flow rate is too high due to a degraded filter or too low due to an air bubble, the dwell time—the amount of time the water spends in contact with the heating element—is disrupted. This results in the water exiting the spout before it can reach the programmed 190°F threshold. You can confirm a scaling issue if you notice a slight decrease in flow velocity or if you live in a hard-water area where white residue is visible on the spout.
How to Fix It
To resolve heating inconsistencies and restore the 190°F output, perform a deep descaling and system prime. Follow these exact steps:
- Empty the water reservoir completely and remove the filter cartridge to ensure the descaling solution flows unobstructed through the heating chamber.
- Fill the reservoir with a mixture of 8oz of white distilled vinegar and 12oz of filtered water, or use a commercial citric acid-based descaling solution.
- Set the Hub to the highest temperature setting (190°F) and dispense the entire reservoir of cleaning solution through the spout. Do not stop the flow until the tank is empty.
- Allow the machine to sit idle for 30 minutes. This allows the acidic solution to break down the calcium carbonate bonds on the heating element.
- Run three full reservoirs of fresh, clean water through the system to flush out all vinegar residues and mineral debris.
- Reinstall a fresh Brita filter and perform a "Prime" sequence by dispensing 2-3 liters of water to purge any air pockets from the internal lines.
- Test the output using a digital thermometer; the water should now hit 185°F–190°F within 3 seconds of dispensing.
If That Didn't Work
- Reset the Thermal Fuse: Unplug the unit from the wall outlet for exactly 10 minutes. This power-cycles the internal control board and resets the thermal safety cut-off, which can occasionally trip if the unit overheated during a low-water event.
- Check the Power Source: Ensure the Hub is plugged directly into a wall outlet rather than a power strip or surge protector. Flash heaters require a high momentary current draw; if the power strip is overloaded, the heating element may not receive enough wattage to reach 190°F.
- Inspect the Filter Seal: Verify that the filter is seated perfectly flush. If the filter is tilted or not locked in, air can be sucked into the heating chamber (cavitation), which prevents the element from heating the water uniformly.
- Factory Reset the Temperature Calibration: Hold the temperature adjustment buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds to reset the digital thermostat to factory defaults, then manually toggle back up to 190°F.

- Hard Water Warning: If your home has a water hardness level above 120 ppm, you must descale the Hub every 60 days to prevent permanent heating element failure.
- Filter Replacement: Never run the Hub without a filter for more than 24 hours, as the internal sensors may trigger a "Low Flow" error that disables the heater.
