Diagnosis
The loud grinding or rattling noise in the Makita XDT16Z is typically caused by a failure within the hammer-and-anvil impact mechanism. Unlike a standard drill, this impact driver uses a heavy internal rotating mass (the hammer) that strikes an anvil to create rotational torque. When the internal lubrication dries out or a bearing fails, the hammer begins to oscillate off-center, creating a violent metal-on-metal rattling sound that often feels like a vibration in the handle. Another common cause is "collet slippage" or debris infiltration. If small metal shards or construction dust enter the 1/4" hex chuck, they can interfere with the locking ball bearings. If the noise is a high-pitched screech rather than a rattle, it is likely a failed thrust bearing at the front of the gear assembly, meaning the shaft is no longer spinning true. You can confirm this by running the tool at low speed without a bit; if the noise is present even without a load, the internal gear train or the hammer assembly is compromised.
How to Fix It
Stop using the tool immediately. Continuing to run the motor while grinding occurs can strip the planetary gears or burn out the motor brushes. Follow these steps to isolate and potentially resolve the issue:
- Remove the 18V LXT battery to ensure the tool cannot be accidentally triggered during inspection.
- Remove the current driver bit. Inspect the 1/4" hex collet for any visible debris, metal shavings, or a stuck locking ball. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the chuck cavity thoroughly.
- Insert a brand new, high-quality impact-rated 1/4" hex bit. Ensure it clicks fully into place. If the noise disappears, the previous bit was likely worn or out-of-round, causing it to wobble within the collet.
- If the noise persists, apply a small amount of high-pressure lithium grease to the base of the bit shank and seat it again. This can sometimes dampen noise caused by a slightly loose collet fit.
- Run the tool at the lowest speed setting. If the rattle only occurs during the "impact" phase (when the trigger is pulled hard and the tool resists), the issue is localized to the hammer mechanism and requires internal servicing.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Hammer and Anvil Assembly: If the tool has seen heavy professional use, the internal hammer may have developed a flat spot or the anvil spring has snapped. You will need to disassemble the gear housing and replace the impact mechanism assembly. This is a precision-timed component; ensure the new part is specific to the XDT16Z model to avoid timing issues.
- Inspect and Replace Front Bearings: A grinding sound often indicates a seized bearing. Check the front-end thrust bearing for signs of overheating or discoloration. If the bearing is pitted, replace it with a high-grade steel replacement to restore smooth rotation.
- Check for Gear Tooth Failure: Open the casing and inspect the planetary gear set. If you find "silver dust" (fine metal shavings) inside the housing, a gear tooth has chipped. The entire gear carrier must be replaced, as the shavings will continue to contaminate the motor.
- Motor Brush Inspection: While less likely to cause a "grind," worn carbon brushes can cause erratic motor behavior and vibration. Check the brushes for uneven wear or sparking; if they are worn down to the spring, replace them to ensure consistent power delivery to the hammer.

- Never use standard screwdriver bits in the XDT16Z; always use impact-rated bits. Standard bits can snap or warp, causing the exact rattling and grinding you are experiencing.
- Avoid using the tool at maximum torque for extended periods on oversized fasteners, as this accelerates the wear on the hammer-and-anvil mechanism.
- Keep the tool away from wet environments or heavy dust without blowing out the vents periodically, as contaminants that enter the motor housing can migrate into the gear assembly.
