In some cases, the internal bearing race has collapsed, causing the gearset to shift off-axis, which leads to the gears grinding against the internal aluminum casing of the tool head. How to Fix It
Because the planetary gearset is precision-timed and sealed within the head assembly, this is not a field-serviceable repair. Attempting to open the gear housing without a clean-room environment will introduce metal shavings and debris into the motor, leading to a complete burnout. - Immediately cease all use of the tool. Continuing to operate the ratchet with stripped gears will send metal fragments into the motor armature and commutator, turning a gear replacement into a full tool replacement.
- Remove the M12 battery and inspect the drive anvil for any signs of bowing or misalignment. If the anvil is bent, the internal housing is likely cracked.
- Locate your proof of purchase. The 2557-20 typically carries a limited warranty that covers manufacturing defects, though "abuse" (using it as a breaker bar) may void this.
