Because the Airmega 400 utilizes a high-torque centrifugal fan, any slight imbalance—such as a piece of debris, a loose filter seal, or a shifted motor mount—is magnified as the RPMs increase. When the fan hits a specific frequency, it creates a vibration that rattles against the plastic housing or the filter frames. To confirm the source, listen closely to the top vent while the unit is on "Auto" versus "High." If the sound is a rhythmic "thrumming," it is likely a filter seating issue. If it is a sharp, metallic rattling or a high-pitched buzz, there is likely a foreign object (like a piece of packaging plastic or a stray pet toy) making contact with the fan blades. You can also confirm this by gently pressing on the top grill; if the noise changes or stops, the issue is vibration-based rather than an internal motor failure.
How to Fix It
Follow these precise steps to clear the obstruction and stabilize the internal components:
- Power down the unit and completely unplug it from the wall outlet to prevent accidental fan activation.
- Remove the front magnetic cover by pulling it away from the chassis.
- Extract both the Max2 and Green True HEPA filters. Check the filter frames for any gaps or warping. If the filters are bowed, they can vibrate against the interior walls at high speeds.
- Using a bright flashlight, peer into the blower wheel chamber located behind the filters. Look for small pieces of plastic, cardboard, or dust clumps that may have bypassed the pre-filter and entered the turbine.
- If debris is found, use a pair of long-reach tweezers or a vacuum with a narrow crevice tool to remove the object. Do not stick your fingers into the blower wheel as the blades are fragile and can be bent.
- Reinsert the filters, ensuring they are pushed firmly into the guide rails. You should feel a distinct "seat" where the filter meets the gasket. If the filter is off by even 2-3 millimeters, the air bypass will cause a buzzing sound.
- Secure the front cover and the top grill. Ensure the top grill is snapped fully into its locking tabs, as a loose grill is a common source of high-speed rattling.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Leveling Issues: The Airmega 400 is heavy and can vibrate if placed on a hollow wooden floor or an uneven surface. Move the unit to a hard, flat surface (like tile or concrete) to see if the rattling persists. If the noise stops, place a thick rubber anti-vibration mat under the base.
- Inspect the Motor Bearings: If the buzzing is a consistent, high-pitched metallic whine regardless of the filter position, the fan motor bearings may be failing. - Verify Filter Authenticity: If you are using third-party "compatible" filters, they often lack the precise dimensions of the OEM Coway filters. A filter that is slightly too small will flutter in the airflow at high speeds, creating a loud rattling noise. Replace them with genuine Coway filters to test.
- Tighten Housing Screws: Carefully check the external screws on the back and bottom of the chassis. If a screw has backed out during shipping or movement, the plastic panels can vibrate against each other at high RPMs.

- Never operate the unit without filters installed, as this allows large debris to enter the blower wheel, which can permanently unbalance the motor and lead to total fan failure.
- Avoid using compressed air canisters directly into the blower wheel; this can push debris deeper into the motor housing or warp the lightweight plastic blades.
- Clean the pre-filter every two weeks. A heavily clogged pre-filter forces the motor to work harder and can lead to "hunting" (fluctuating speeds), which increases wear on the bearings.
- If the unit is placed against a wall, ensure there is at least 12-15 inches of clearance. Restricted airflow can cause the motor to overheat, leading to abnormal acoustic signatures.
