DIAGNOSIS The RT-AX86U Pro has an internal fan that kicks in under high CPU load (like VPN processing, heavy traffic). Constant loud noise suggests it's stuck in high-speed mode or the vents are blocked.
FIX Check for and reduce CPU load.
- Log into the web interface, go to System Log > General Log.
- Look for high continuous CPU usage. Common culprits are Adaptive QoS, Traffic Analyzer, or AiProtection. Temporarily disable these features under Adaptive QoS and AiProtection to see if the fan quiets down.
- Ensure the router has at least 4 inches of clear space on all sides, especially the top and rear vents.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The fan curve might be overly aggressive. Install the latest firmware, as updates sometimes adjust thermal management. If the noise persists and the router feels very hot, the internal thermal paste/pad may be failing—this requires an RMA if under warranty.
HEADS UP Some fan noise during peak evening internet usage (7-11 PM) is normal. But loud, constant whirring during idle times is not. Never place the router in an enclosed cabinet or on top of a heat source like an amplifier.
