This isn't necessarily a sign that the battery is "dead," but rather that the internal protection circuit has tripped. This usually occurs when the BMS detects a voltage discrepancy between the individual lithium-ion cells or a "thermal event" where the battery overheated during a high-torque application, causing the circuit to open to prevent a catastrophic cell failure. You can confirm this is a BMS lockout if the battery shows a partial charge on the fuel gauge but the drill refuses to engage the trigger. When the tool detects a voltage drop below the safe operating threshold (typically around 9V for a 12V pack) or a communication error between the battery pins and the drill's brushless controller, it enters a "protection mode." This locks the output to prevent the cells from being over-discharged, which would permanently ruin the battery's chemistry.
How to Fix It
To clear the electronic lockout and reset the communication bridge between the battery and the drill, follow these precise steps:
- Remove the battery pack from the base of the GSR12V-300B22.
- Locate the fuel gauge button on the top of the battery pack.
- Press and hold the fuel gauge button firmly for exactly 15 seconds. Do not release it early; this duration is necessary to discharge the capacitors in the BMS and force a hard reset of the logic board.

If That Didn't Work

- Check for "Cell Sag" by attempting to charge the battery for exactly 10 minutes. If the charger immediately flashes red or green without a charging cycle, one of the internal cells has likely fallen below the critical voltage threshold (under 2.5V), meaning the battery is chemically dead and requires replacement.
- Inspect the battery release latch. If the latch is worn or loose, the battery may be shifting slightly during use, breaking the connection for a millisecond. This "micro-arc" can trip the protection circuit. Ensure the battery sits flush against the tool housing.

- Avoid Non-OEM Chargers: Only use genuine Bosch GAL 12V chargers. Third-party chargers often lack the precise voltage-balancing circuitry required for the GSR12V-300B22 series, which can lead to frequent red-flash errors.
