Diagnosis
The flashing red LED on your Bosch PS31-2A indicates a critical communication failure between the battery's Battery Management System (BMS) and the tool's motor controller. This typically occurs when the battery enters a "protection mode" due to an undervoltage event (deep discharge) or a temporary electronic glitch, preventing the tool from drawing power to protect the lithium-ion cells from permanent damage.
How to Fix It
To clear the fault and restore power, follow these steps to reset the battery's internal logic:
- Remove the battery pack completely from the drill driver.
- Locate the fuel gauge/status button on the battery pack.
- Press and hold this button firmly for 5 to 10 seconds. This action can often clear a "soft" fault in the BMS.
- Inspect the metal contact terminals on both the battery and the tool for debris, dust, or carbon buildup. Clean them with a dry cloth or a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol.
- Slide the battery back into the tool, ensuring you hear a distinct "click" to confirm a secure electrical connection.
- Pull the trigger to test for power.
If That Didn't Work
If the red light persists, the issue is likely hardware-related:
- Deep Discharge: Place the battery on the charger for at least 2 hours. If the charger also flashes red, the battery voltage has dropped below the minimum threshold and the pack is dead.
- Cell Failure: A faulty internal cell group has likely failed, triggering a permanent safety lockout. In this case, the battery pack must be replaced.
- Trigger Switch Failure: If multiple fully charged batteries produce the same red light, the internal trigger switch or the motor controller in the PS31-2A has failed.

Never attempt to open the plastic casing of the 12V Max battery pack. Lithium-ion cells are highly volatile; puncturing the casing or shorting the terminals during a DIY repair can lead to thermal runaway and intense chemical fires.
