my cube is making a loud gurgling or bubbling noise, like water is running through pipes, is that normal?

— asked by Morgan

DIAGNOSIS That gurgling is normal, especially when it first starts up or after it's been off for a while. It's the sound of refrigerant moving through the coils. It should fade after a few minutes of steady running.

FIX Usually, no fix is needed—just let it run. However, if the noise is constant and very loud, it could mean the unit isn't level, causing the refrigerant to flow unevenly. Check that all four feet are firmly on the floor and the unit isn't rocking. Place a small level on top if you have one, and adjust the feet if possible.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If the gurgling is accompanied by a hissing sound or gets worse, there's a small chance of a refrigerant leak. In that case, the dehumidifying performance will also drop noticeably. If it's under warranty, contact Midea. User-side repairs for refrigerant issues aren't practical.

HEADS UP New units are often noisiest for the first 24-48 hours of operation as the system settles in. If it's just gurgling and otherwise working well, give it a couple of days before worrying.
