Since this is a brushless model, you don't have to worry about worn carbon brushes; instead, the issue is typically "clutch slip." This happens when the internal spring-loaded balls in the clutch ring lose tension or the lubricant inside the gearbox has degraded, causing the tool to "click" or stall long before it reaches its rated maximum torque. Another common culprit is the electronic speed controller (ESC) overheating or failing to communicate correctly with the HP battery's high-discharge cells. If the trigger switch is accumulating sawdust or debris, it can cause intermittent voltage drops, making the motor feel "sluggish" or weak even when the battery indicates a full charge. You can confirm a clutch issue if you hear a rapid clicking sound when the drill stalls, whereas a motor/electronic failure will usually result in a sudden, silent stop or a burning smell coming from the vents.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to isolate the mechanical settings and reset the drive train:
- Verify Gear Selection: Locate the sliding gear switch on the top of the tool. Ensure it is pushed fully into position '1'. Position '2' provides high speed but significantly lower torque; if the switch is halfway between 1 and 2, the gears may not be fully engaged, leading to slippage.
- Override the Torque Clutch: Rotate the torque adjustment ring (the numbered collar) clockwise until it clicks firmly into the "Drill Bit" icon. If That Didn't Work
- Check for Chuck Slippage: If you are using a keyless chuck, the jaws may be slipping on the shank of the bit. Ensure you are tightening the chuck until it "clicks" or locks. If the bit is spinning inside the chuck, it will feel like the motor is stalling when it is actually just a grip failure.

- Avoid Over-Torquing: Never use the drill in "Drill Mode" (the bit icon) to drive large lag screws into hardwood; this puts immense stress on the brushless controller and can burn out the ESC. Use the numbered clutch settings for fasteners.
- Heat Management: Brushless motors are efficient, but the gears still generate heat. If the tool feels hot to the touch, let it cool for 10 minutes. Overheated grease becomes thinner, which increases the likelihood of clutch slip.
