When the head spins slowly despite a fully charged battery, it is typically a "limp mode" response triggered by the Electronic Control Unit (ECU). This occurs when the motor detects an excessive load or an electrical imbalance, causing the system to throttle power to prevent the windings from melting or the battery from triggering an over-current shutdown. In most cases, this is caused by "invisible" binding. Thick grass or fibrous vines often wrap tightly around the spindle behind the trimmer head, creating immense friction that isn't immediately visible from the top. The ECU senses this resistance and limits the RPMs to protect the gear head. Alternatively, if the tool was used in high heat or with thick brush, the internal thermal sensors may be keeping the motor in a restricted state to allow the heat sinks to dissipate energy, even if the casing feels cool to the touch. You can confirm this by attempting to spin the head by hand (with the battery removed); if there is any significant resistance or a "rubbing" sound, the issue is mechanical debris.
How to Fix It
To resolve the low-RPM issue and reset the electronic controller, follow these precise steps:
- Power Down and Discharge: Remove the M18 battery pack entirely. Press and hold the trigger for a full 15 seconds. This drains the remaining capacitors in the motor controller and clears the temporary error state from the ECU memory.
- Mechanical Debris Purge: Turn the trimmer upside down. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers or a utility knife to carefully clear all grass, twine, and debris from the gap between the trimmer head and the gear housing. Ensure the spindle can rotate freely with zero resistance.
- Head Inspection: Remove the trimmer head (the 2725-20 uses a specific bump-feed or fixed-line head). Check the drive shaft for any bends or debris trapped in the splines. Reinstall the head, ensuring it is seated flush against the housing to prevent vibration-induced sensor trips.
- Battery Verification: Insert a high-discharge battery, preferably an M18 High Output (HO) pack. Lower-capacity batteries can sometimes trigger low-voltage protection if the initial current draw is too high due to debris.

If That Didn't Work
- Inspect the Battery Terminals: Check the gold-plated contacts inside the battery bay and on the battery itself. If there is carbon buildup or oxidation, the motor may not be receiving the full amperage required for high-speed rotation. Clean the contacts with a cotton swab dipped in 90% isopropyl alcohol.
- Check for Line Overload: If you have loaded too much trimmer line or used a line diameter thicker than .095 inches, the increased centrifugal mass can trick the motor into a low-power mode. Trim the line back to 5 inches and test the RPMs again.
- Test with a Different Battery: If you are using an older generation M18 battery, it may have a failing cell that cannot maintain the voltage under load, causing the tool to "bog down" as soon as the motor engages. Test with a known-good, recently calibrated battery.
- Gear Head Lubrication: If the tool has been used for over 50 hours, the grease in the gear head may have degraded or leaked. If you hear a grinding noise accompanying the slow spin, the internal planetary gears may be binding, requiring a professional rebuild of the gear assembly.
Heads Up
- Avoid "Heavy Loading": Never force the trimmer through thick woody brush; the 2725-20 is designed for grass and light weeds. Forcing it will trigger the electronic protection and can permanently weaken the motor magnets.
- Heat Management: If the tool enters thermal protection, do not place it in a freezer or use compressed air to cool it rapidly, as this can cause condensation inside the brushless controller, leading to a short circuit.
