The beeping sound on the Makita XSR01Z is a specific electronic alert indicating a "Battery Communication Failure." Because this saw utilizes a 36V system powered by two 18V LXT batteries in series, the tool's internal logic board requires a synchronized "handshake" from both battery packs before it will engage the brushless motor. If one battery has a failed communication chip, a blown internal fuse, or is significantly lower in charge than the other, the tool will trigger a safety lockout to prevent unbalanced voltage from damaging the motor controller. This often happens because of "voltage mismatch." If you are using one brand-new high-capacity battery (e.g., 5.0Ah) and one older, degraded battery (e.g., 2.0Ah), the voltage differential can be high enough that the saw perceives a fault. Additionally, fine sawdust can accumulate in the battery rails, preventing the small data pins—which are separate from the main power terminals—from making a secure connection. To confirm this is the issue, check if the LED indicator on the batteries flashes when you attempt to pull the trigger; if only one flashes or neither does, the communication loop is broken.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to reset the communication loop and clear the terminals:
- Remove both 18V batteries from the tool completely.
- Inspect the battery terminals on the batteries themselves and the female receptors inside the saw's battery bays. Look for compressed sawdust or metallic shavings. Use a can of compressed air or a vacuum to blow out the slots.
- Using a clean, dry microfiber cloth or a cotton swab dipped in 90% isopropyl alcohol, gently wipe the gold-plated contact pins on the batteries. Do not use abrasive scrubbers.
- Ensure both batteries are fully charged. Place both batteries on their respective chargers until the "Full" light is solid. Even a 10% difference in charge can trigger the beep lockout.
- Insert the batteries into the saw, ensuring you hear a distinct "click" from the locking tabs. If the battery feels loose, the data pin may not be engaging.
- Swap the positions of the batteries (move the left battery to the right slot and vice versa) to rule out a specific faulty bay in the tool.
- Pull the trigger firmly. If the beeping stops and the blade spins, the issue was likely a poor connection or voltage imbalance.
If That Didn't Work
- Test with a different pair of batteries: Borrow a known-working set of two 18V LXT batteries. If the saw works with a different pair, one of your original batteries has a failed internal BMS (Battery Management System) chip and must be replaced.
- Check for "Ghost" Battery Error: If you are using third-party (non-Makita) batteries, the XSR01Z often rejects them because they lack the proprietary communication chip required for 36V tools. Replace generic batteries with genuine Makita 18V LXT packs.

- Battery Storage: Never store your batteries completely depleted. If the voltage drops too low, the onboard chip may "trip," rendering the battery unable to communicate with 36V tools even after a recharge.
- Terminal Care: Never apply WD-40 or oil to the battery terminals, as this attracts sawdust and creates a conductive sludge that can cause short-circuiting.
