While the microwave still heats and runs, the circuit responsible for triggering the light is interrupted. Unlike the primary and secondary safety switches—which prevent the microwave from running with the door open—the light switch is a dedicated component that tells the control board to send power to the bulb when the door latch is released. You can confirm this by listening closely when you open the door. You should hear a distinct "click" from the switches located behind the door frame. If you hear two clicks but the light remains off, the light switch is likely stuck in the "off" position or the internal contacts have oxidized and failed. Because this model uses a series of interlock switches, a failure in the light switch will not stop the microwave from functioning, but it confirms that the mechanical trigger is no longer completing the electrical circuit for the lighting system.
How to Fix It
- Power Down: Disconnect the microwave from the power source. Since this is an Over-the-Range (OTR) unit, you must either unplug it from the upper cabinet outlet or shut off the dedicated circuit breaker in your electrical panel. Never work on a microwave while plugged in due to the high-voltage capacitor.
- Remove the Outer Shell: Remove the screws securing the top vent grille and the rear panel. Carefully slide the chassis forward or remove the outer cabinet skin to gain access to the door frame assembly.
- Locate the Interlock Switches: Look at the right-hand side of the microwave chassis where the door latches. You will see three small microswitches with plastic actuators (plungers). The light switch is typically the one positioned slightly differently than the two primary safety switches.
- Test for Continuity: Set your multimeter to the Continuity or Ohms setting. Place the probes on the terminals of the light switch. With the door closed (switch depressed), the circuit should be open. When you manually press the switch plunger with your finger, the multimeter should beep or show near-zero resistance. If the reading doesn't change when the plunger is pressed, the switch is dead.
- Replace the Switch: Pull the faulty switch out of its mounting bracket. Disconnect the spade connectors from the wires. Install a new GE-compatible microswitch (ensure the actuator length matches exactly). Slide the connectors firmly onto the new terminals.
- Reassemble and Test: Slide the cabinet back into place, reinstall the vent grille, and restore power. Open the door to verify the light now activates immediately.
If That Didn't Work
- Inspect the Bulb Socket: Even if the bulb looks fine, the socket tabs can lose tension or corrode. Use a multimeter to check for voltage at the socket when the door is open. If you have voltage but no light, the socket itself is faulty and needs replacement.
- Check the Door Latch Alignment: Inspect the plastic door hooks (latches) on the door itself. If the hook is worn down or chipped, it may not be pushing the light switch actuator far enough to trigger the circuit. If the hook is loose, tighten the mounting screws or replace the latch assembly.
- Examine the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring leading from the door switches to the main control board. Look for signs of heat damage or "brittle" wires. A loose spade connector on the back of the switch can cause an intermittent connection that mimics a failed switch.
- Verify the Control Board Relay: In rare cases, the relay on the main control board that handles the light circuit can fail. If the switch tests positive for continuity but no power reaches the bulb, the control board may need to be replaced.

- Capacitor Danger: Even with the power off, the high-voltage capacitor inside the microwave can hold a lethal charge. Do not touch the capacitor or the magnetron unless you have properly discharged the capacitor using an insulated screwdriver.
- Avoid Over-tightening: When reinstalling the chassis screws, do not over-torque them. The metal skin of the PVM9005SJSS is relatively thin and can strip easily, leading to vibration noise during operation.
