DIAGNOSIS: The printer isn't recognizing the chip on the new cartridge. This is usually caused by a poor electrical connection or a protective tab you missed.
FIX: Reseat the cartridge and clean the contacts. Open the ink cover, remove the cartridge, and check that the orange protective tape is fully removed (peel from the bottom). Use a dry cotton swab to gently wipe the gold chip on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts inside the printer. Reinsert firmly until it clicks.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK: The cartridge chip might be faulty or the printer's cartridge detection system needs a reset. Turn the printer off, unplug it for 2 minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on. If it still fails, try another cartridge—even from the same pack.
HEADS UP: Using non-Epson or heavily discounted 'compatible' cartridges can trigger this error more frequently. The WF-2960 is particularly sensitive to chip communication. Genuine Epson cartridges are the most reliable fix.
