Diagnosis
The root cause of the belt clip failure on the Milwaukee M12 FUEL Installation Drill (2505-20) is the failure of the integrated thermoplastic threads within the tool's glass-filled nylon housing. Because the belt clip is subjected to constant lateral tension and vibration during use, the screw can gradually back out or, conversely, be overtightened during initial assembly, shearing the delicate plastic ridges inside the mounting hole. You can confirm this by attempting to thread the original screw into the hole by hand. If the screw spins freely without catching or "bottoming out" with any resistance, the internal threads have been completely stripped. In some cases, the plastic around the hole may also show stress whitening or hairline fractures, indicating that the material has fatigued under the load of the clip's weight and the user's movements.
How to Fix It
To restore the belt clip's stability, you need to create new friction points within the housing or replace the fastener with one that can engage deeper, undamaged plastic. Follow these steps:
- Remove the existing stripped screw and clear any plastic debris from the hole using a small needle or a 1/16" drill bit (do not drill deep; just clear the surface).
- Procure a Milwaukee replacement screw (Part # 49-06-2001). This specific fastener is slightly longer than the factory-installed screw, allowing it to reach deeper into the housing where the plastic is still intact.
- Apply a small amount of two-part epoxy or a high-strength thread-locking compound (like Loctite 242) to the threads of the new screw. Do not flood the hole; a thin coat on the threads is sufficient.
- Align the belt clip firmly against the handle. Insert the screw and rotate it clockwise using a #2 Phillips head driver.
- Tighten the screw only until you feel the first point of significant resistance. Stop immediately once the clip is snug. Overtightening will strip the new threads instantly, rendering the repair permanent and irreparable.
- Allow the epoxy or thread-locker to cure for at least 4 hours before attaching the tool to your belt.
If That Didn't Work
If the hole is too enlarged for the replacement screw to bite, try these alternatives:
- Plastic Plug Method: Take a small piece of a plastic zip-tie or a thin sliver of a plastic coffee stirrer. Insert it into the stripped hole to act as a shim, then drive the screw in. The shim compresses against the walls of the hole, forcing the screw threads to bite into the plastic.
- Epoxy Filling: Fill the hole completely with a high-strength, steel-reinforced epoxy. Let it cure for 24 hours. Once hardened, use a small drill bit to drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than the screw diameter, then drive the screw into the cured epoxy.
- Threaded Insert Installation: For a permanent professional fix, use a small brass heat-set insert. Use a soldering iron to melt the brass insert into the plastic housing. This replaces the plastic threads with metal threads, making it impossible to strip the hole again.
- External Bracket: If the housing is cracked, avoid using the internal hole. Use a heavy-duty adhesive-backed belt clip accessory that wraps around the handle of the 2505-20, bypassing the need for the screw hole entirely.
Heads Up
- Never use a power driver to install the belt clip; the torque of a drill will strip the nylon housing in a fraction of a second. Always use a manual screwdriver.
- Check the clip every few weeks for looseness. If it starts to wiggle, tighten it immediately to prevent the screw from spinning and stripping the hole again.
- Avoid hanging the tool by the belt clip when it is loaded with heavy installation accessories; the clip is designed for carrying, not as a primary suspension point for heavy loads.
- If you use thread-locker, ensure it is "removable" grade so you can still remove the clip for cleaning or tool maintenance without damaging the handle.
