The issue where the blade stops short of a true 0-degree perpendicular cut on the Milwaukee M18 FUEL Table Saw (2736-20) is typically caused by a misalignment between the physical stop of the bevel arm and the visual indicator on the bevel scale. In many cases, the bevel lock lever is applying tension against a stop-pin or the casting of the saw body that has shifted slightly during transport or heavy use, preventing the blade from reaching a perfect 90-degree angle relative to the table surface. This is rarely a mechanical failure of the gear system but rather a calibration drift. You can confirm this by placing a precision machinist square against the table and the side of the blade. If there is a visible gap at the bottom of the blade while the pointer reads "0," the scale is lying to you. If the blade physically hits a hard stop before the pointer reaches "0," the bevel stop screw or the casting alignment is the culprit.
How to Fix It
To calibrate the blade to a true 0-degree position, follow these precise steps:
- Remove the M18 battery pack to ensure the tool cannot accidentally activate during the adjustment process.
- Place a high-precision 90-degree square on the table surface. Slide the square up against the blade, ensuring it is flush against the table and the side of the blade teeth.
- Release the bevel lock lever completely. Attempt to rotate the blade toward the 0-degree mark. If it hits a physical stop before the square is flush, do not force it.
- Locate the black plastic bevel scale pointer. Using a Phillips #2 screwdriver, loosen the two small screws securing the plastic scale plate to the chassis. Loosen them only enough so the plate can slide laterally without falling off.
- While holding the blade firmly against the machinist square (ensuring a perfect 90-degree angle), slide the plastic bevel scale plate until the "0" mark aligns perfectly with the bevel indicator pointer.
- Tighten the two scale screws firmly, but do not over-torque them, as the plastic can crack.
- Engage the bevel lock lever and verify that the blade does not shift away from the square. If the blade moves when you lock the lever, you must loosen the lever, align the blade to the square again, and then lock it, then repeat the scale alignment process.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for debris buildup in the bevel gear housing. Sawdust can pack into the casting around the pivot point, creating a physical obstruction that prevents the blade from descending that final degree. Use compressed air to blow out the bevel assembly and the locking mechanism.
- Inspect the bevel lock lever for over-tightening. If the lever has been clamped too hard over time, the internal pin may be slightly deformed. Loosen the lock nut on the lever assembly by a quarter-turn to allow the arm more freedom of movement.
- Verify the table flatness. If the table has been bumped or the legs are uneven, the table itself may be tilted relative to the saw's chassis. Place the square on the table and check for "rocking." If the table is out of alignment, the blade will never appear square even if the bevel is set to 0.
- Check the blade arbor for play. If the blade is wobbling or the flange is not seated perfectly flat, the blade may be leaning, giving the illusion that the bevel is off when it is actually a blade-seating issue. Remove the blade and re-install it, ensuring the flange is clean.

- Always use a machinist square rather than a carpenter's square for this process; a 1/16th-inch variance at the base can lead to significant gaps in your joinery.
- Avoid over-tightening the bevel lock lever; once the blade is set, a firm snap is sufficient. Over-tightening can warp the internal alignment pins over time.
- Periodically check the calibration every 20-30 hours of heavy use, as the vibrations from cutting hardwoods can cause the plastic scale to shift.
- Keep the bevel gears lubricated with a dry PTFE spray; avoid using heavy grease, which attracts sawdust and creates a "sludge" that blocks the 0-degree stop.
