Diagnosis
The absence of any LED activity (no green "Good" or red "Replace" signal) on the PUR PLUS PFM400H indicates a total failure of the electronic monitoring circuit. In 95% of cases, this is caused by a depleted 4LR44 6V alkaline battery. Because the indicator is designed to track water flow via a small internal turbine, it requires a constant, low-voltage current to maintain the timer and trigger the LED. When the voltage drops below the operational threshold, the circuit breaks entirely, leaving the light dark. To confirm this is a battery issue and not a mechanical failure, check if the water flow itself is restricted. If water flows normally through the filter but the light remains dead, the issue is isolated to the power source or the battery contact points. If you recently installed the unit and the light never blinked during the initial setup, it is possible the factory-installed battery was drained during storage or the battery contact tabs are slightly bent, preventing a secure connection to the cell.
How to Fix It
To restore power to the electronic indicator, you must replace the internal battery cell. Follow these precise steps:
- Turn off the water supply to the faucet to prevent accidental leaks during disassembly.
- Carefully unscrew the filter head assembly from the faucet aerator. Ensure you are gripping the plastic housing firmly to avoid stripping the threads.
- Locate the small, rectangular battery compartment located on the underside/bottom of the filter head.
- Using a small coin or a flat-head screwdriver, rotate the locking screw counter-clockwise to release the battery cover.
- Remove the existing 4LR44 (also known as an A16 or LR44 6V) battery. Note the orientation of the battery before removal.
- Insert a fresh 4LR44 6V alkaline battery. The positive (+) terminal must face the center of the compartment, aligned with the polarity markings embossed into the plastic.
- Press the battery firmly into place and snap the cover back on, tightening the screw until snug but not over-tightened, as the plastic housing can crack.
- Reattach the filter head to the faucet and run the water for 30 seconds to ensure the turbine is spinning and the circuit is active.
If That Didn't Work
- Clean the Contact Terminals: Use a cotton swab dipped in 90% isopropyl alcohol to clean the metal contact tabs inside the battery compartment. Over time, mineral deposits from leaking faucet water or oxidation can create a thin film that blocks electrical current.
- Check for Battery Compression: If the battery feels loose in the slot, the spring contact may have lost tension. Gently pry the metal contact tab upward with a needle to ensure it makes a tight, pressurized connection against the battery terminal.
- Reset the Filter Cycle: If the light is still unresponsive, the internal logic may be frozen. Remove the battery, hold the filter head upside down and shake it gently to ensure the turbine is free of debris, then reinstall the battery.
- Inspect for Internal Leaks: Examine the battery compartment for any signs of moisture or "white powder" (battery leakage). If the compartment is wet, the circuit board may be shorted. Dry it thoroughly with a hairdryer on a cool setting before attempting another battery swap.

- Battery Specifications: Do not attempt to use standard LR44 button cells (1.5V) in place of the 4LR44 (6V). The 4LR44 is a stack of four cells; using a single 1.5V cell will not provide enough voltage to trigger the LED.
- Waterproofing: Always ensure the battery cover screw is fully tightened. A loose cover allows water to seep into the electronics, which will permanently corrode the circuit board and render the indicator useless.
- Replacement Timing: The battery typically lasts for the life of 2-3 filter cartridges, but if you have very high water usage, the turbine spins more frequently, which can deplete the battery faster.
- Avoid Over-tightening: When reattaching the unit to the faucet, avoid using pliers. Hand-tighten only to prevent cracking the plastic mounting bracket.
