Because this tool is an impact wrench, it is often used in high-vibration environments where these particulates are shaken deep into the sliding detent mechanism. The grinding feel occurs when these abrasive particles lodge themselves between the selector slide and the internal spring-loaded ball detent. This creates friction on the plastic-to-metal contact points, effectively turning the lubricant into a grinding paste. If you feel a "catch" or a lack of a crisp click when switching directions, the detent spring is likely fouled or the slide has become slightly misaligned due to debris buildup. You can confirm this by looking for a ring of grey or brown dust concentrated around the seam of the selector switch.
How to Fix It
To restore the smooth action of the selector, you need to flush the contaminants out and re-lubricate the sliding track. Follow these steps precisely:
- Remove the 18V LXT battery immediately to prevent accidental trigger pulls during the cleaning process.
- Using a high-pressure compressed air nozzle (preferably with a thin needle tip), blow air directly into the gaps around the forward/reverse slider. Move the slider back and forth rapidly while applying air to break up the packed debris.
- Apply a small amount of electronic-grade contact cleaner (such as QD Contact Cleaner) into the switch housing. This solvent breaks down the grease-and-dust paste without leaving a sticky residue that would attract more dirt.
- While the solvent is still wet, cycle the selector switch between forward, reverse, and neutral 20 to 30 times. You should feel the "grinding" sensation diminish as the debris is flushed out.
- Once the switch moves freely, apply a single drop of dry PTFE (Teflon) lubricant or a silicone-based spray to the edges of the slider. Avoid using heavy WD-40 or thick grease, as these act as magnets for the very dust that caused the problem.
- Wipe away any excess lubricant with a lint-free microfiber cloth to ensure no oil drips onto the trigger or battery terminals.
If That Didn't Work

- Chemical Soak: For extreme cases of hardened grease, soak a cotton swab in a heavy-duty degreaser and press it firmly against the switch seams, allowing the chemical to seep in for 5 minutes before repeating the compressed air flush.

- Never use penetrating oils like PB Blaster inside the switch housing; these can degrade the plastic components of the XWT15Z and attract excessive metallic dust.
