You can confirm this by attempting to move the switch while the tool is off; if you feel a "gritty" sensation or a hard stop before the switch fully clicks into the forward or reverse position, the mechanism is contaminated.
How to Fix It
To restore the smooth operation of the DCD771 slider without fully dismantling the gear housing, follow these precision cleaning steps:
- Remove the 20V Max battery pack immediately to ensure no accidental trigger pulls occur during the cleaning process.
- Use a high-pressure can of compressed air with the narrow straw attachment. Insert the straw into the gap between the slider and the tool body. Blast air from the left side toward the right, and then from the right toward the left, focusing specifically on the base of the slider where debris tends to settle.
- Apply a non-conductive, fast-evaporating electrical contact cleaner (such as CRC QD Contact Cleaner). Do not use WD-40 or silicone lubricants, as these attract more dust and will create a "sludge" that worsens the sticking over time.
