Once these are gone, the minerals are more prone to "plating out" or crystallizing onto the non-porous plastic surface of the pitcher. You can confirm this is mineral scale if the film feels slightly gritty to the touch or if it resists standard dish soap and warm water, as soap is alkaline and cannot break down mineral deposits.
How to Fix It
To remove the mineral film without scratching the plastic or damaging the pitcher's integrity, you must use a mild acid to dissolve the alkaline calcium deposits. Follow these exact steps:
