The cloudiness and scratching on your Brita Stream Rapids pitcher are caused by a combination of mineral buildup (limescale) and mechanical abrasion. The pitcher is constructed from a BPA-free SAN (Styrene Acrylonitrile) plastic. While durable, this material is susceptible to "crazing"—microscopic cracks that form when the plastic is exposed to harsh chemicals or high-heat cycles in a dishwasher. When calcium and magnesium from your tap water settle into these micro-fissures, they create a white, opaque film that cannot be removed by standard dish soap. Furthermore, the scratches are likely the result of using abrasive cleaning tools, such as steel wool, green scouring pads, or stiff-bristled brushes. These tools create deep grooves in the soft plastic surface, which then trap organic residue and minerals, making the pitcher look permanently "foggy." To confirm if this is mineral buildup or permanent structural damage, rub a small drop of white vinegar on a cloudy area; if the cloudiness disappears momentarily, it is limescale. If the texture remains rough and matte, the plastic has been physically etched.
How to Fix It
If the cloudiness is caused by mineral deposits, you can restore the clarity using a mild acid soak. Do not use abrasive scrubbers during this process.
- Empty the pitcher completely and remove the filter cartridge to avoid contaminating the activated carbon.
- Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar and three parts warm water inside the pitcher reservoir. Fill it to the maximum fill line.
- Let the solution soak for at least 4 to 6 hours. For severe "milky" buildup, leave it overnight. This breaks the ionic bond between the calcium deposits and the plastic.
- Using a soft microfiber cloth or a silicone sponge, gently wipe the interior walls. Do not apply heavy pressure.
- Rinse the pitcher thoroughly with lukewarm water.
- To address light surface scratches, apply a tiny amount of non-gel whitening toothpaste (which contains a very mild abrasive) to a cotton swab. Rub in small, circular motions over the scratched area for 30 seconds, then rinse.
- Reinsert the filter and run two full pitchers of water through the system to flush out any residual vinegar scent.
If That Didn't Work
- Baking Soda Paste: If vinegar didn't clear the haze, create a thick paste using two tablespoons of baking soda and one tablespoon of water. Apply this to the cloudy areas with a soft cloth. The baking soda acts as a very fine polishing agent that is less aggressive than a scouring pad. Let it sit for 15 minutes before rinsing.
- Citric Acid Treatment: For heavy-duty hard water regions, use 1 tablespoon of food-grade citric acid powder dissolved in warm water. Citric acid is more effective than vinegar at chelating minerals and can often lift "permanent" cloudiness that vinegar misses.
- Plastic Polish: If the scratches are deep, you can use a dedicated plastic polishing compound (like Novus Plastic Polish). Apply a small amount to a clean microfiber cloth and buff the exterior of the pitcher in circular motions. This fills in the micro-scratches to restore transparency.
- Replacement: If the plastic has "crazed" (developed a network of tiny internal cracks from dishwasher heat), the structural integrity of the plastic is compromised. At this stage, the pitcher cannot be polished or cleaned, and the reservoir must be replaced to avoid plastic particulates leaching into your water.

- Avoid the Dishwasher: Never put the Brita Stream Rapids reservoir in the dishwasher. The high heat and caustic detergents cause the plastic to degrade and cloud over time. Always hand-wash with a soft sponge.
- Temperature Control: Do not fill the pitcher with boiling or extremely hot water. Thermal shock can cause the SAN plastic to crack or warp, leading to leaks at the seam.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Never use bleach or ammonia-based cleaners on the pitcher. These chemicals can strip the finish of the plastic and may contaminate the filter media if not rinsed perfectly.
- Filter Maintenance: Always remove the filter before cleaning the pitcher to prevent the filter from absorbing the cleaning agents, which would render the filter useless and potentially toxic to drink.
