DIAGNOSIS The printer isn't reading the chip on the new cartridge properly. This can happen if there's a bit of plastic from the packaging still on the contacts, the contacts on the cartridge or inside the printer are dirty, or the cartridge wasn't seated fully.
FIX Power the printer on and open the cartridge access door. The carriage will move to the center. Press down firmly on the cartridge that's showing the error until you feel a definite click. Don't just tap it. If that doesn't clear it, remove the cartridge. Look at the copper-colored contacts on the back. Use a dry, lint-free cloth (like a microfiber glasses cloth) to gently wipe them. Do the same for the shiny contacts inside the printer where the cartridge sits. Reinstall the cartridge firmly.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK Try the other cartridge slot. Swap the 'problem' cartridge with the one from the other slot. If the error moves with the cartridge, the cartridge itself might be defective. If the error stays in the same slot, there could be a deeper issue with the printer's carriage.
HEADS UP Never use anything wet or abrasive (like a paper towel) to clean the contacts. Static from a dry cloth is fine. Also, make sure you removed the entire plastic tape from the printhead nozzles on the bottom of the cartridge before installing it.
