The lower blade guard on the Bosch GKS18V-25CN operates on a heavy-duty torsion spring and a pivot-pin system. When the guard retracts slowly or "stutters," it is almost always due to the accumulation of resinous pitch and fine sawdust within the pivot housing. This debris acts as a mechanical brake, increasing friction at the exact point where the spring tension is lowest, preventing the guard from snapping back into the closed position instantaneously. In some cases, the issue is structural rather than debris-based. Because the GKS18V-25CN is a compact, lightweight saw, it is common for users to accidentally drop the tool or lean it against a wall on its side. This can slightly bend the guard arm or displace the pivot pin, causing the guard to rub against the base plate or the blade's outer diameter. You can confirm this by inspecting the guard for "shiny spots" or scrape marks on the inner metal surface, which indicate metal-on-metal contact rather than just dirt buildup.
How to Fix It
- Power Down: Remove the 18V battery pack immediately. Never perform maintenance on the guard with a power source connected, as an accidental trigger pull during cleaning can cause severe injury.
- Debris Extraction: Use a high-pressure compressed air nozzle to blow out the pivot point where the lower guard attaches to the saw body. Focus specifically on the gap between the guard arm and the main chassis.
- Chemical Degreasing: Apply a dedicated pitch and resin remover or a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to a stiff nylon brush. Scrub the pivot pin and the inner edges of the guard. Manually cycle the guard open and closed 10-15 times to work the solvent into the joint.
- Mechanical Alignment Check: With the guard in the fully open position, check the gap between the guard edge and the blade. If the guard is touching the blade, use a pair of needle-nose pliers to gently bend the guard arm outward by 1-2mm.
- Lubrication: Apply a single drop of dry PTFE (Teflon) lubricant or a silicone-based spray to the pivot pin. Avoid using heavy grease or WD-40, as these attract sawdust and will create a "sludge" that makes the sticking problem worse over time.
- Functional Test: Lift the saw 6 inches off a workbench and release the guard. It should snap shut with an audible "clack" instantly.
If That Didn't Work
- Spring Tension Failure: If the guard moves smoothly but lacks the "snap" to close, the internal torsion spring has likely lost its tension or partially snapped. This requires the removal of the pivot pin and replacement of the spring assembly. If the spring is visibly deformed, it must be replaced to ensure operator safety.
- Pivot Pin Wear: Inspect the pivot pin for "ovaling." If the hole has worn into an oval shape due to heavy use, the guard will tilt and bind. This requires replacing the lower guard assembly entirely, as the pivot housing is integrated into the saw's casting.
- Blade Interference: Check if you are using an oversized or warped blade. If the blade is not seated perfectly flat against the flange, it can rub against the guard. Ensure the blade is the correct diameter for the GKS18V-25CN and is tightened securely.
- Base Plate Obstruction: Check the underside of the saw. If the base plate is bent or has a buildup of dried glue/paint, it can interfere with the guard's path of travel. Sand down any protrusions on the base plate using 80-grit sandpaper.

- Avoid Wet Lubricants: Never use heavy oils or automotive grease on the guard. Sawdust mixes with oil to create a thick paste that will eventually seize the guard completely.
- Daily Blow-out: Make it a habit to blow out the guard pivot with compressed air after every project to prevent pitch buildup.
- Never Pin the Guard: Never use a nail, screw, or tape to pin the guard open for "better visibility." This disables the primary safety mechanism and is a leading cause of catastrophic injury.
- Check Blade Sharpness: A dull blade creates more vibration and heat, which can actually accelerate the buildup of resin on the guard's inner surface.
