Diagnosis
This issue on the Craftsman 57915 typically stems from one of three failure points: a burnt-out filament, a failed socket contact, or a logic board glitch. Because the wall control panel still operates the motor, we know the main power supply and the logic board's primary relays are functioning. The failure is isolated to the lighting circuit. In many cases, the high vibration of the belt-drive system combined with the heat from traditional incandescent bulbs causes the thin metal tabs at the bottom of the socket to lose tension or oxidize. If you replace the bulb and it still doesn't light up, the problem is likely "socket fatigue," where the center contact tab no longer makes a firm connection with the base of the bulb. To confirm, check if the light flickers when you gently jiggle the bulb while the unit is powered on.
How to Fix It
Follow these steps to restore lighting to your garage opener:
- Disconnect the power cord from the 120V outlet to prevent electrical shock during the repair.
- Position a sturdy ladder directly beneath the motor head. Locate the plastic light lens cover on the underside of the unit.
- Grip the sides of the lens cover and pull downward firmly but steadily. The plastic tabs will snap out of the housing.
- Unscrew the existing bulb by turning it counter-clockwise. Note if the bulb looks blackened or if the filament is visibly broken.
- Inspect the socket. Look at the small brass tab at the very bottom center of the socket. If it looks flattened, use a small flat-head screwdriver or needle-nose pliers to gently pry the tab upward by about 1/8th of an inch to ensure a tighter connection.
- Install a new LED bulb. Specifically, use a 60W-equivalent LED rated for "Enclosed Fixtures." Standard LEDs can overheat in the small housing of the 57915 and burn out prematurely.
- Carefully align the lens cover and press upward until you hear a distinct click on both sides.
- Plug the unit back into the outlet and press the wall button to test the light.
If That Didn't Work
- Check the Light Timing Settings: The 57915 has a programmable light timeout. If the light doesn't stay on, check the logic board settings. If the light never triggers, try a "hard reset" by unplugging the unit for 10 full minutes to clear any temporary logic errors in the control board.
- Inspect the Socket Wiring: If you are comfortable with basic wiring, remove the motor cover and locate the wires leading to the light socket. Ensure the two wires are firmly crimped into the socket terminals. Vibration from the belt drive can occasionally shake a loose wire completely out of its terminal.
- Test for a Blown Logic Fuse: While the motor works, some versions of this board have separate traces for the lighting circuit. Inspect the green PCB for any scorched areas or "burnt" smells near the light relay. If the board is charred, the entire logic board must be replaced.
- Verify Bulb Compatibility: Some high-wattage "smart bulbs" or non-dimmable LEDs do not play well with the pulsed power delivered by the Craftsman logic board. Try a basic, non-branded A19 LED bulb to rule out compatibility issues.
Heads Up
- Never use a bulb exceeding 60 watts. Using a 100W incandescent bulb will melt the plastic lens and can warp the socket housing, creating a fire hazard.
- Always use "Enclosed Fixture" rated LEDs. Standard LEDs have heat sinks that require airflow; without it, the driver inside the bulb will fail within weeks.
- Avoid over-tightening the bulb into the socket. Over-tightening can flatten the contact tab further, leading to the same "no light" problem you just fixed.
- Check your light lens every six months for cracks. A cracked lens allows dust and insects into the socket, which can cause short circuits or premature bulb failure.
