tp-link deco app says i can't use parental controls or qos, why are they grayed out?

— asked by Lisa

Those features are unavailable because your Deco system is operating in Access Point (AP) mode. In AP mode, the Deco acts as a simple Wi-Fi broadcaster, and the router functions (including Parental Controls, QoS, DHCP server, Port Forwarding, and Address Reservation) are disabled.

To restore these features, you must change the operating mode to Router mode.

  1. Open the Deco app.
  2. Tap the menu (three lines or 'More' icon).
  3. Tap Advanced.
  4. Scroll to and tap Operating Mode.
  5. Change the mode from 'Access Point' to 'Router'.
  6. Follow the app prompts. This will likely require a reboot of your network.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK: If the mode is already set to 'Router' and features are still missing, check your firmware version. Go to the app menu, tap Update, and ensure you are on the latest version. An outdated firmware can cause missing options.

HEADS UP: When in Router mode, your Deco manages your network's IP addresses. If you have another router (like from your ISP), you may want to set that device to 'Bridge' or 'Modem Only' mode to avoid conflicts.
