DIAGNOSIS The gear shift mechanism is misaligned or the shift fork inside is worn. This is a physical, mechanical issue.
FIX Operate the shift lever with intention and confirm engagement.
- Always shift gears only when the drill is completely stopped.
- Apply firm, positive pressure to the lever until you feel a definite click. Don't "feather" it.
- After shifting, gently pull the trigger (no bit) to hear if the gear is fully engaged—a grinding noise means it's not.
IF THAT DIDN'T WORK The shift detent spring is broken or the shift fork is bent. This requires disassembly. The shift fork (part number 232005-5) is a known wear item on high-use drills.
HEADS UP Forcing the lever or shifting under power will shear the teeth off the nylon gear selectors, requiring a full gearbox rebuild. Always ensure the chuck is stopped.
