Diagnosis

The appearance of a repeating vertical gray line or smudge on an HP LaserJet Pro M404dn is almost always indicative of a physical defect on the imaging drum or the primary charge roller (PCR) located inside the CF258A or CF258X toner cartridge. Because the drum is a cylinder, any single speck of dust, a scratch in the photosensitive coating, or a hardened "clump" of toner will leave a mark on the paper every time the drum completes one full 360-degree rotation. To confirm this is a cartridge issue rather than a fuser problem, you must measure the distance between the repeating marks. On the M404dn, if the smudge repeats every 75mm to 95mm, the fault is definitively the toner cartridge drum. If the marks repeat at a much larger interval (usually over 100mm), the issue is likely the fuser assembly. A faint gray line specifically suggests a "leak" in the electrical charge on the drum, often caused by a microscopic scratch or a buildup of toner dust on the wiper blade that is failing to clear the drum surface.

How to Fix It

Since the imaging drum is integrated into the toner cartridge for this model, the fix involves cleaning or replacing the consumable. Follow these steps precisely:

1. Open the top cover of the M404dn and remove the toner cartridge by gripping the handle and pulling it straight out of the machine.
2. Remove the cartridge from the printer and place it on a clean sheet of white paper or a lint-free cloth to avoid contaminating your workspace.
3. Locate the green or blue cylindrical roller (the imaging drum). Do NOT touch this roller with your fingers, as skin oils will cause permanent spots on future prints.
4. Inspect the surface of the roller for any visible debris, such as a piece of paper scrap, a staple fragment, or a clump of toner. If you see a physical particle, use a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth or a cotton swab dipped in 90% isopropyl alcohol to gently lift the debris away. Do not scrub the roller.
5. Gently rock the cartridge from side to side (horizontally) about five times. This redistributes the toner powder and can sometimes dislodge "clumping" that causes faint streaks.
6. Slide the cartridge back into the printer, ensuring it clicks firmly into the drive gears, and close the cover.
7. Print a "Supplies Status" page from the printer menu to see if the line persists. If the line is still present and the roller looks clean, the photosensitive coating has been scratched, and the cartridge must be replaced.

If That Didn't Work

• Replace the Toner Cartridge: If cleaning the drum didn't work, the PCR or the drum surface is permanently damaged. Install a new HP CF258X (High Yield) cartridge. If the line disappears immediately, the previous cartridge had a defective wiper blade or a scratched drum.
• Check the Fuser Assembly: If the line persists even with a brand new cartridge, the fuser rollers (the heat elements that melt the toner) may have a build-up of melted plastic or toner. Open the rear door and inspect the orange/black fuser rollers for any adhered debris. Use a vacuum or a soft brush to clear any loose particles.
• Perform a Cleaning Cycle: Navigate to the printer control panel: Setup > Service > Cleaning Page. Load a sheet of plain paper and run the cycle. This feeds a page through the machine to pick up excess toner dust from the internal transfer rollers.
• Inspect the Paper Path: Ensure you are using 60-75 gsm laser-grade paper. Using inkjet paper or damp paper can cause "toner scatter," which creates a gray haze or vertical smudging that mimics a drum defect.

• Avoid Third-Party "Remanufactured" Cartridges: Cheap generic cartridges often have poorly manufactured wiper blades that fail prematurely, leading to these exact vertical streaks.
• Never Use Solvents: Never use acetone or harsh chemicals on the imaging drum; this will strip the organic photoconductor (OPC) layer and render the cartridge useless.
• Store Cartridges Properly: Keep spare cartridges in their original boxes and stored vertically. Laying them flat for long periods can cause toner to settle unevenly, leading to streaks upon first installation.
• Avoid Direct Sunlight: Do not leave a toner cartridge out of the printer in direct sunlight for more than a few minutes. The drum is light-sensitive; overexposure will cause "ghosting" or white streaks across your pages.
