can i take the carafe off my elite gourmet to pour a cup while it's still brewing?

Yes. It has a Pause 'n Serve feature. Removing the carafe during brewing activates the drip stop valve, pausing the cycle. Do not open the lid while the unit is in operation. Return the carafe to the warming plate to resume brewing. Use extreme care as the carafe will be very hot.
