can i use my stihl ms 250 to cut up an old pressure-treated fence post?

No. The machine is designed only to saw wood and wooden objects.

Using it on pressure-treated lumber, which contains metals and chemicals, violates that intended use. Here's why it's a problem:

  • Rapid Dulling: The chemicals and grit in treated wood will destroy your chain's cutting edges almost immediately.
  • Contamination: Sawdust from treated wood is hazardous to breathe and can clog the air filter and cooling system with toxic dust.
  • Accelerated Wear: The residue is highly abrasive and will prematurely wear out the guide bar groove, sprocket, and clutch.
  • Voided Warranty: Using the saw for any other purpose increases the risk of accidents and voids your warranty coverage.

If you need to cut treated wood: Use a dedicated demolition blade in a circular saw or reciprocating saw. They are designed for nail-embedded and abrasive materials.

Heads up: Stick to clean, natural wood. If you've been cutting resinous lumber or under very dusty conditions, you need to shorten all your maintenance intervals—clean the air filter and cooling fins much more often.
