The grinding noise you hear without a corresponding increase in cutting performance indicates a failure in the mechanical engagement between the PowerSharp sharpening stone and the cutter teeth. In the Oregon CS1500, the "self-sharpening" feature relies on a precision-timed movement where the sharpening stone is pushed forward into the path of the chain. When you hear grinding but the chain remains dull, the stone is either physically worn down to its base (meaning there is no abrasive surface left to bite into the metal) or the stone has become "glazed," where metal filings have filled the pores of the abrasive, creating a smooth surface that slides over the teeth rather than cutting them. Another common root cause is improper chain tension. The PowerSharp system requires the chain to be held tightly against the bar to ensure the teeth are positioned exactly where the stone strikes. If the chain has stretched or the tensioner is loose, the chain will sag slightly. This causes the stone to strike the side of the tooth or the drive link instead of the cutting edge, resulting in a loud, metallic grinding sound without actually sharpening the edge. You can confirm this by inspecting the stone after a sharpening cycle; if you see silver streaks on the stone but no visible "shavings" of metal, the alignment is off.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must first verify the chain tension and then replace the consumable sharpening module if the stone is depleted.
- Check Chain Tension: Loosen the guide bar nuts slightly. Pull the chain away from the bar; there should be a small gap, but when you snap it back, it should sit flush against the bottom of the bar. Tighten the nuts firmly. A loose chain is the #1 cause of "phantom grinding."
- Remove the PowerSharp Module: Locate the sharpening assembly at the base of the saw. Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the retaining screws holding the stone assembly in place.
- Inspect the Stone: Remove the stone and look at the abrasive surface. If the stone is concave or shows a deep groove where it has worn down, it must be replaced.
- Install New Stone: Insert a genuine Oregon PowerSharp replacement stone. Ensure the stone is seated fully and flush against the mounting bracket. If it is tilted even by a millimeter, it will grind the wrong part of the tooth.
- Clear Debris: Use compressed air or a stiff brush to clear all sawdust and pitch from the area where the stone makes contact with the chain. Debris buildup can prevent the stone from extending fully.
- Test Cycle: Engage the sharpening trigger. Listen for a consistent, high-pitched grit sound rather than a hollow metallic grind.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Chain: If you have used the PowerSharp system excessively on a single chain, you may have worn the teeth down past the "depth gauge" limit. Once the cutter tooth is worn too far back, the sharpening stone can no longer reach the cutting edge. Replace the chain with a new Oregon-compatible chain.
- Inspect the Trigger Mechanism: The grinding noise may actually be the internal motor spinning without the stone being pushed forward. Check the plastic linkage that pushes the stone into the chain path. If the plastic tab is snapped or worn, the motor will run, but the stone will never make contact.
- Check for Bar Wear: If the guide bar rails are worn or "mushroomed," the chain will not track straight. This causes the teeth to enter the sharpening zone at an angle, leading to grinding noise and uneven sharpening. Replace the bar if the rails are significantly wider than the drive links.
- Clean the Drive Sprocket: A clogged sprocket can cause the chain to jump or vibrate during the sharpening cycle. Remove the side cover and scrape out all packed sawdust and pitch from the sprocket area to ensure a smooth, linear chain movement.

- Avoid Over-Sharpening: Only engage the PowerSharp system when you notice a significant drop in cutting speed. Over-using the system prematurely wears down the cutter teeth and shortens the overall lifespan of the chain.
- Lubrication is Key: Always ensure your bar and chain oil reservoir is full. Running the saw dry creates excessive heat, which can glaze the sharpening stone and ruin the temper of the chain steel.
- Safety First: Never attempt to manually push the sharpening stone or clear debris while the saw is plugged into a power source. Always disconnect the cord before removing the module.
- Stone Disposal: Used PowerSharp stones contain abrasive materials that can be irritating to the skin; dispose of them properly and avoid touching the abrasive surface with bare fingers.
