Diagnosis
The most common cause of a sudden shutdown on a charged Greenworks 40V chainsaw is the thermal overload protector engaging. This safety feature activates when the motor overheats, which is typically caused by excessive resistance. The primary culprits are a dull chain, forcing the saw through the cut, or cutting wood that is too large in diameter for the 16-inch bar.
How to Fix It
First, set the saw aside in a shaded area to cool down completely, which usually takes 15-20 minutes. While it cools, inspect the chain. If it's producing fine dust instead of coarse wood chips, it needs sharpening. Use a round file matching your chain's pitch to sharpen each cutter. After reassembly and before cutting again, ensure the chain tension is correct—it should snap back against the bar when pulled away. When operating, apply only light pressure and let the chain's speed do the cutting.
If That Didn't Work
If the saw still won't start after cooling, perform a power check. Remove the battery and inspect the metal contacts on both the saw and the battery for dirt, debris, or green corrosion. Clean them with a dry cloth or a pencil eraser. Reinstall the battery firmly. Next, test the battery in another Greenworks 40V tool to confirm it holds charge. Finally, check the chain brake; ensure it is fully disengaged, as the saw will not start if the brake is on.
Heads Up
Continuously running a dull chain or forcing the saw can cause permanent damage to the motor. For hard or large logs, make relief cuts and let the saw work at its own pace. Regularly clean the bar groove and oil ports to ensure proper lubrication, which reduces friction and heat.
