Diagnosis
The primary cause for a Greenworks 40V chainsaw with a live battery light but no motor response is a safety mechanism being engaged. The most common is the chain brake, which physically locks the clutch drum. A secondary, and very likely, cause is not properly engaging the trigger lockout safety. These are intentional features to prevent accidental startup.
How to Fix It
- First, check the chain brake. The large, front hand guard should be pulled fully back toward the front handle until you hear and feel a distinct click. This disengages the brake. Visually confirm the chain can now be moved by hand (with the battery removed for safety).
- If the brake is disengaged, operate the saw correctly: Place your right hand on the rear handle, and use your left thumb to firmly depress the trigger lockout button on the top of the rear handle. While holding that lockout down, squeeze the trigger with your right index finger. The motor should engage.
If That Didn't Work
If following the correct two-handed start procedure still yields no result, the issue is electrical. Check that the battery is fully seated and charged. Inspect the trigger and lockout switches for visible damage or obstruction like sawdust. A failing trigger assembly, a loose motor connection, or a defective control board are less common but possible internal faults requiring professional service.
Heads Up
Always start the saw with the chain brake disengaged, but re-engage it whenever you are moving more than a few steps or pausing between cuts. This "kickback" brake is a critical safety feature. Never attempt to bypass the safety switches.
