Diagnosis
The most common cause is a faulty battery where one or more internal cells are weak or have failed. The battery's management system (BMS) reads a full charge initially, but under the high load of the chainsaw, the voltage from the bad cells drops rapidly, triggering a protective shutdown after about two minutes. Less likely, but possible, is excessive resistance in the power path due to dirty or damaged contacts either on the battery or inside the saw's battery slot.
How to Fix It
- Test with another battery: Use a different, confirmed-good Greenworks 40V battery in your chainsaw. If it runs normally, your original battery is the culprit.
- Clean the contacts: With the battery removed, inspect the metal terminals in the saw's battery compartment and on the battery itself. Clean any dirt or light corrosion with a dry cloth or a swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol. Ensure no plastic debris is obstructing the connection.
- Claim warranty: If the battery is faulty and still under warranty, contact Greenworks customer service directly for a replacement. Do not attempt to repair the battery pack.
If That Didn't Work
If a known-good battery also dies quickly in your specific saw, the fault lies within the tool. The motor or electronic components may be overheating, or there could be a partial break in the internal wiring creating high resistance. Never disassemble a lithium-ion battery. Damaging the cells can lead to thermal runaway, fire, or explosion. Always use official Greenworks 40V batteries, as third-party packs may not communicate properly with the tool's electronics and can void your warranty.
