Diagnosis
Severe vibration and chain skipping on your Greenworks 40V 16-inch cordless chainsaw often stem from wear in the drive system or maintenance issues. Primary causes include worn or damaged drive links on the chain, a worn drive sprocket, incorrect chain tension, or a clogged bar groove. As a battery-powered tool, inconsistent power from a low or faulty battery can also contribute to erratic chain movement and vibration.
How to Fix It
- Disconnect the battery and ensure the saw is off.
- Inspect the chain's drive links for hooks, burrs, or uneven wear. Replace the chain if damaged, using an exact match for pitch, gauge, and length.
- Examine the drive sprocket teeth for matching wear or chipping; replace if necessary.
- Check and adjust chain tension: the chain should be snug against the bar but still pull freely by hand using the tensioning screw.
- Clean the bar groove thoroughly with a narrow screwdriver or bar groove cleaner to remove packed sawdust and debris.
- Verify bar and chain lubrication: fill the oil reservoir and ensure oil flows to the chain when running at low speed.
If That Didn't Work
Inspect the bar for straightness and damage to the rails, as a bent bar can cause skipping. Check the clutch assembly and sprocket alignment for wear. Test with a fully charged, healthy battery to rule out power issues. If vibration persists, internal motor or bearing problems may require professional service from an authorized Greenworks repair center.
