The Epson EcoTank ET-2800 is designed primarily for home office documents, utilizing a top-loading friction-feed system. While it is capable of printing on thicker media like cardstock and photo paper, the primary limitation is the physical "arc" the paper must travel through to reach the print head. If the paper is too rigid (excessive GSM) or too slick, the pickup rollers will either slip—resulting in a "Paper Out" error—or the paper will buckle, causing a catastrophic jam in the rear feed slot. Furthermore, the ink system in the ET-2800 uses dye-based inks for the color tanks. Dye inks soak into the fibers of standard paper but sit on top of glossy photo paper. If the printer is set to "Plain Paper" while using heavy photo paper, the printer will not dispense the correct volume of ink, leading to streaks, "banding" (horizontal lines), or ink that never dries and smudges upon touch. Confirm your paper's weight by checking the packaging for the GSM (grams per square meter) rating; anything over 300 GSM is likely to fail in this specific model.
How to Fix It
To successfully print on thick cardstock or photo paper without jamming or smudging, follow these precise configuration steps:
- Media Preparation: Fan the stack of cardstock or photo paper to remove static cling. Load no more than 5-10 sheets at a time into the rear tray to prevent the rollers from skipping. Ensure the paper guides are snug against the edges but not pinching the paper, as this causes skewed prints.
- Driver Configuration (Windows/Mac): Do not simply hit "Print." Go to Printing Preferences or Print Settings. Change the Paper Type from "Plain Paper" to "Premium Glossy Photo Paper" or "Ultra Premium Glossy Photo Paper" depending on your media. This tells the printer to slow down the feed rate and adjust the ink saturation.
- Quality Selection: Change the Print Quality setting from "Standard" to "High." This increases the DPI (dots per inch) and ensures the ink is laid down evenly on the denser surface of the cardstock.
- Physical Feed: When you press the Print button, gently nudge the top edge of the paper downward with your finger as the rollers first engage. This provides the initial momentum needed to pull heavy cardstock into the feed mechanism.
- Drying Time: Once the page ejects, do not touch the image. Let the page sit on a flat surface for at least 60 seconds to allow the dye-based ink to bond with the photo coating.
If That Didn't Work
- Switch to Matte Media: If glossy photo paper is jamming, try a "Matte" cardstock. Matte papers typically have a higher coefficient of friction, making them easier for the ET-2800's rubber rollers to grab compared to slippery high-gloss coatings.
- Clean the Pickup Rollers: If the printer is "cycling" (making a grinding noise) but not grabbing the paper, the rollers are likely contaminated with paper dust. Dampen a lint-free cloth with a small amount of distilled water and gently wipe the rubber rollers in the rear feed tray.
- Reduce Paper Weight: If you are using 300+ GSM "heavy" cardstock and it refuses to feed, you must switch to a lighter weight (around 160-200 GSM). The ET-2800 cannot physically bend paper that is too stiff without risking damage to the internal plastic chassis.
- Disable "Quiet Mode": In the printer settings menu, ensure "Quiet Mode" is turned off. Quiet Mode slows down the motor speed, which can sometimes cause the rollers to lose grip on heavier media.
Heads Up
- Avoid "Laser" Paper: Never use cardstock specifically labeled "For Laser Printers." These papers often have a chemical coating that can melt or smudge when used with the ET-2800's inkjet system.
- Ink Saturation: Printing high-resolution photos on thick paper consumes ink much faster than document printing. Check your ink levels in the tanks frequently to avoid printing "streaks" caused by air bubbles in the lines.
- Avoid Overloading: Never force a large stack of cardstock into the rear feeder. Overloading leads to "multi-feeds," where the printer pulls two sheets at once, potentially jamming the print head.
