In these Bluetooth thermal printers, the print head initiates the burn process based on a coordinate system set in the driver or the mobile app. If the "Left Margin" or "Horizontal Offset" is set to 0 or a negative value while the physical label is loaded slightly off-center, the tracking barcode—which typically sits at the far right edge of a 4x6 label—will be pushed beyond the printable area of the thermal head. This is rarely a mechanical failure of the rollers but rather a calibration mismatch. The printer's internal sensor is failing to recognize the exact edge of the label stock, or the software is sending a 4x6 image to a printer configured for a slightly different width (such as 3.8 inches). To confirm this is a software offset issue, print a "Test Page" from the printer's hardware menu; if the test page is centered but your shipping labels are shifted, the problem lies entirely within your shipping software's print settings.
How to Fix It
To correct the alignment and recover your barcodes, follow this precise sequence to calibrate the hardware and adjust the software offsets:
- Perform a Hard Sensor Calibration: Turn the printer off. Load a fresh roll of 4x6 labels and ensure the guides are snug against the sides of the roll (no more than 1mm of wiggle room). Turn the printer on. With the lid closed, press and hold the FEED button for exactly 5 seconds. The printer will flash its LEDs and feed 2-3 blank labels to detect the gap between the labels. This resets the physical "zero" point.
- Adjust Software Margins: Open your shipping platform (e.g., Pirate Ship, ShipStation, or the dedicated Bluetooth Label app). Navigate to Settings > Printer Settings > Page Setup.
- Set the Horizontal Offset: Locate the "Left Margin" or "X-Offset" field. Since your labels are shifting left, you need to push the image back to the right. Increase the Left Margin by 0.1" or 0.2" increments. If the software uses a coordinate system, enter a positive value (e.g., +5mm) to shift the print area rightward.
- Verify Paper Size: Ensure the paper size is explicitly set to 4" x 6" (101.6mm x 152.4mm). If it is set to "Default" or "Letter," the printer will attempt to center the label based on a wider page, causing the shift.
- Test Print: Print a single label. If the barcode is still cut off, repeat step 3, increasing the offset by another 0.1" until the barcode is fully contained within the label edge.
If That Didn't Work
- Check Label Guide Tension: If the plastic guides inside the printer are too loose, the label roll will drift to the left during the feed process. Tighten the green or black plastic sliders until they touch the label roll. If the roll is slipping, the printer cannot maintain a consistent X-axis start point.
- Clear the Print Spooler: Sometimes old, incorrectly formatted print jobs hang in the Bluetooth queue, causing the printer to apply old offset settings to new labels. Turn off the printer, restart your phone or PC, and clear the print queue before attempting the fix again.
- Update Firmware via USB: If the Bluetooth connection is causing data packet loss (which can manifest as alignment shifts), connect the printer via the USB cable to a PC. Use the printer's configuration tool to update the firmware and set the "Print Density" to medium, which can sometimes improve the sensor's ability to detect label edges.
- Switch to PDF Direct Printing: If you are printing from a web browser, the browser often adds its own margins. Save the label as a PDF first, open it in a dedicated PDF viewer (like Adobe Acrobat), and select "Actual Size" or "Fit to Page" in the print dialog to bypass browser-induced shifts.

- Avoid Over-Tightening: Do not jam the label guides too tightly against the roll; if the roll cannot spin freely, the motor will struggle, leading to "skipped" labels or skewed printing.
- Clean the Thermal Head: Every 500 labels, use a cotton swab dipped in 90% isopropyl alcohol to clean the print head. Dust buildup can cause "white lines" through your barcodes, making them unscanable even if they are perfectly aligned.
- Use High-Quality Thermal Labels: Cheap, non-branded labels often have inconsistent gap spacing. If the gap between labels varies by even 1mm, the sensor calibration will fail, causing the print to drift further left or right over time.
- Battery Management: If using the printer in wireless mode, ensure the battery is above 20%. Low voltage can occasionally cause the stepper motor to miss a step during the initial feed, resulting in a shifted print.
