The error code 0xc19a0023 on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e indicates a critical carriage stall. This occurs when the printhead carriage—the assembly that holds the ink cartridges—attempts to move across the rail but encounters physical resistance that exceeds the motor's torque limit. Once the printer detects this resistance, it triggers a safety shutdown to prevent the stepper motor from burning out or stripping the plastic gears in the drive assembly. This is typically caused by one of three things: a foreign object (like a staple or a scrap of paper) lodged in the carriage path, a malfunctioning ink cartridge that isn't seated flush and is physically hitting the top of the chassis, or a failure of the encoder strip—the thin, clear plastic ribbon that tells the printer exactly where the carriage is located. If the strip is smudged with ink or grease, the printer "loses" the carriage position and throws this error even if there is no physical blockage. You can confirm a physical jam if the carriage is tilted or skewed, or if you feel a hard "stop" when trying to move it manually while the power is off.
How to Fix It
- Power down the printer completely using the power button on the front panel. Unplug the power cord from the rear of the machine and the wall outlet to ensure no electrical current is running to the carriage motors.
- Open the main front access door and then lift the ink cartridge access door. This exposes the carriage area.
- Gently grasp the printhead carriage. If it is locked in place, do not force it. Check for any visible debris, such as torn pieces of paper or fallen office supplies, located at the far left or far right of the carriage rail.
- Carefully slide the carriage manually from the left side to the right side. If you feel a snag, use a pair of tweezers to remove the obstruction. Ensure the carriage moves smoothly across the entire width of the printer.
- Inspect each ink cartridge. Push down firmly on each one to ensure they are clicked fully into place. A slightly protruding cartridge can catch on the internal plastic frame, triggering the 0xc19a0023 error.
- Locate the encoder strip—the thin, translucent plastic strip running horizontally behind the carriage. Using a lint-free cloth dampened with a tiny amount of distilled water (no alcohol), gently wipe the strip from one end to the other to remove any ink splatters or grease.
- Close all access doors securely. Plug the printer back into the wall and power it on. The printer should perform a calibration cycle and clear the error.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Power Reset. With the printer on, pull the power cord directly from the back of the unit. Wait exactly 60 seconds. While unplugged, hold the power button for 15 seconds to discharge the internal capacitors. Plug it back in and restart. This often clears "ghost" jams stored in the volatile memory.
- Check the Rear Access Door. Some jams that cause carriage errors are actually caused by paper stuck in the rear duplexer. Open the rear panel, remove the duplexer assembly, and check for any jammed sheets that might be pushing against the carriage rail from behind.

- Update the Firmware. If the carriage moves freely but the error persists, connect the printer to a PC and use the HP Smart app to check for firmware updates. Some early versions of the 8135e firmware had over-sensitive carriage sensors that caused false positives.

- Never use rubbing alcohol or window cleaner on the encoder strip; these chemicals can strip the microscopic timing marks off the plastic, rendering the printer unable to align the printhead.
- Avoid using canned air to blow out debris, as this can push small fragments deeper into the gear assembly or blow ink residue onto the optical sensors.
- Always ensure you are using genuine HP 922 or 922S cartridges; third-party cartridges with slightly different dimensions can cause physical friction against the carriage housing.
- If you hear a loud grinding noise upon startup, stop the printer immediately. This indicates a gear failure or a severely derailed carriage that could cause permanent hardware damage if forced.
