Dust and airborne particulates do not only get trapped by the HEPA filter; a significant amount of "bypass dust" settles on the internal chassis, the centrifugal fan blades, and the intake grilles of the Levoit Vital 100S. Over time, this accumulation creates a layer of grime that restricts airflow, forcing the motor to work harder and potentially causing a high-pitched whistling sound or a noticeable drop in CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate). The root cause is usually twofold: first, the intake grilles on the bottom and sides act as a primary screen, catching larger debris before it hits the filter. Second, static electricity causes fine dust to cling to the plastic housing and the edges of the fan assembly. You can confirm the need for a deep clean if you notice a visible grey film on the interior walls after removing the filter or if the unit smells "musty" despite having a brand-new filter installed.
How to Fix It
To thoroughly clean the interior of the Vital 100S without damaging the electronics, follow these precise steps:
- Power Down: Unplug the unit from the wall outlet. Do not simply turn it off via the touch panel; complete electrical isolation is required to prevent shorting the sensor board.
- Filter Removal: Open the bottom base panel and remove the HEPA/Carbon filter. Set the filter aside in a plastic bag to avoid releasing trapped dust back into the room.
- External Intake Cleaning: Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft-bristle brush attachment. Run the brush along the perimeter of the bottom intake vents and the side slats. Ensure you remove the "dust bunnies" that often clog the corners of the base.
- Interior Chassis Wipe-down: Using a slightly damp (not dripping) microfiber cloth, wipe the interior plastic walls of the filter chamber. Focus on the lower rim where the filter sits, as this area often collects sediment.
- Fan Blade Detailing: Reach into the upper housing to access the fan blades. Use a dry cotton swab or a thin microfiber cloth to wipe each individual blade from the center hub outward to the edge. If dust is stubborn, use a small amount of isopropyl alcohol (70%) on the cloth to break down the grime.
- Sensor Maintenance: Locate the laser dust sensor (usually a small window/opening on the side or back). Gently vacuum the sensor opening or use a dry cotton swab to clear any debris blocking the infrared beam, which ensures the "Auto" mode functions correctly.
- Reassembly: Allow the interior to air dry for 15 minutes before re-inserting the filter and closing the base panel.
If That Didn't Work
- Compressed Air Blast: If dust is trapped in the motor housing where cloths cannot reach, use a can of compressed air. Use short, controlled bursts directed at the motor vents. Hold the fan blade steady with a non-conductive tool (like a plastic chopstick) to prevent the motor from spinning backward at high speeds, which can generate electricity and damage the control board.
- Deep Sensor Reset: If the unit still indicates "Poor" air quality after cleaning, the sensor may be coated in a film. Use a vacuum with a narrow crevice tool directly against the sensor port for 30 seconds to clear deep-seated particles.
- Odors Persistence: If a musty smell persists after cleaning the interior, the plastic housing may have absorbed odors. Wipe the interior surfaces with a solution of one part white vinegar and three parts water, then wipe again with plain water to neutralize the scent.

- Liquid Warning: Never spray cleaning liquids directly into the unit. The Vital 100S contains a PCB (printed circuit board) in the base; any liquid seepage can cause an immediate short circuit and void the warranty.
- Filter Integrity: Never attempt to wash or vacuum the HEPA filter itself. Vacuuming a HEPA filter damages the microscopic glass fibers, rendering it useless. Only clean the plastic housing and the fan.
- Frequency: Perform this internal detailing every 3 to 6 months, depending on your pet ownership and local pollen levels, to maintain the longevity of the motor.
- Static Prevention: Avoid using overly abrasive sponges or paper towels on the interior plastic, as scratches can create static hotspots that attract dust faster.
