The Levoit Vital 100S utilizes a high-precision laser particle sensor located on the rear panel of the device. When the indicator light remains stuck on purple (moderate) or red (poor) despite the air feeling clean, it is rarely a total hardware failure of the sensor itself. Instead, the sensor's optical chamber has likely become contaminated with "ghost particles"—microscopic dust, pet dander, or sticky residue that has settled on the laser lens. Because the sensor works by bouncing a laser beam off particles to measure density, any debris physically resting on the lens mimics a high concentration of pollutants, triggering a constant "Poor" air quality reading. Additionally, this issue can be caused by "sensor drift" or environmental interference. If the unit is placed too close to a humidifier, a scented candle, or a kitchen area where aerosolized oils are present, the sensor will react to these volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or moisture droplets, which it interprets as PM2.5 pollutants. You can confirm if the sensor is malfunctioning by moving the unit to a different room entirely; if the light remains red after 10 minutes in a neutral environment, the sensor is physically obstructed and requires a deep clean.
How to Fix It
To clear the sensor and recalibrate the Vital 100S, follow these precise steps:
- Power down the unit completely and unplug the power adapter from the wall outlet to prevent electrical shorts during cleaning.
- Locate the sensor intake vent on the rear of the chassis. It is a small, recessed rectangular opening specifically designed for air to enter the laser chamber.
- Using a can of compressed air (with the straw attachment), hold the nozzle approximately 1 inch away from the vent. Deliver three to four short, sharp bursts of air into the opening. This dislodges the accumulated dust bunnies and hair that often clog the intake.
- Take a dry, medical-grade cotton swab. Gently wipe the outer perimeter of the sensor opening to remove any surface grime. Do not insert the swab deep into the sensor chamber, as you risk scratching the laser lens or pushing debris further in.
- If the unit was used near a kitchen, lightly dampen the swab with 90% Isopropyl alcohol and wipe the exterior grill to remove any oily films that may be trapping dust.
- Plug the unit back in and power it on. Leave the device in "Auto Mode" for at least 15 minutes without adjusting any settings. This allows the internal logic to recalibrate the baseline air quality reading.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Reset: Unplug the unit and hold the power button down for 30 seconds to discharge the internal capacitors. Plug it back in and toggle the "Auto" mode off and on again. This can clear temporary software glitches that cause the LED to freeze on a specific color.
- Check Filter Seating: Ensure the HEPA filter is seated perfectly flush against the internal housing. If the filter is skewed or improperly installed, "dirty" air from the bottom of the unit can bypass the filter and blow directly into the sensor, creating a feedback loop that keeps the light red.
- Relocate the Unit: Move the purifier at least 3 feet away from walls, curtains, or other furniture. If the unit is tucked into a corner, it may be recirculating its own exhaust or trapping a pocket of stagnant air around the sensor, leading to inaccurate readings.
- VeSync App Calibration: Open the VeSync app on your smartphone. Check if there is a firmware update available for the Vital 100S. Sometimes a software patch is released to adjust the sensitivity of the laser sensor to prevent "false positives" in clean environments.

- Avoid Fragrances: Never use essential oil diffusers or incense within 5 feet of the unit; the laser sensor cannot distinguish between "pollution" and "scent particles," which will keep the light red.
- Monthly Maintenance: Make it a habit to blow out the sensor vent with compressed air once a month, especially in homes with shedding pets.
- Filter Replacement: A heavily clogged filter can restrict airflow, causing the sensor to read the "trapped" air around the unit rather than the room air. Replace filters every 6 months to maintain sensor accuracy.
- Moisture Warning: Never use liquid cleaners or vacuum cleaners with brush heads directly on the sensor vent, as this can scratch the lens and permanently ruin the sensor's accuracy.
