The "Clean" indicator on the GE Profile Opal 2.0 is not a sensor-based system that detects the actual cleanliness of the internal components; rather, it is a programmatic timer. The machine tracks the total number of hours the unit has been powered on and the volume of ice produced. Once a specific threshold is reached, the firmware triggers the alert to ensure the user performs a descaling process to prevent mineral buildup on the evaporator plate. If the light remains on after you have physically cleaned the unit, it is because the internal logic board has not registered the completion of a full cleaning cycle or the manual reset sequence was not executed precisely. This often happens if the machine was powered off during the cleaning process or if the buttons were not pressed in the exact synchronized window required by the control board.
How to Fix It
To manually clear the clean indicator and reset the internal maintenance timer, follow this exact sequence while the machine is plugged in and powered on:
- Ensure the machine is in its standard "Ready" state and not currently in the middle of a freeze cycle.
- Locate the Sonic Ice button and the Light button on the front control panel.
- Press and hold both the Sonic Ice and Light buttons simultaneously. You must apply pressure to both at the exact same time.
- Maintain this hold for a full 5 to 7 seconds. Do not release them the moment you see a change; count to seven to ensure the command is registered.
- Watch for the LED indicators on the front panel to flash rapidly. This flash is the confirmation that the maintenance timer has been zeroed out.
- Release the buttons. The "Clean" light should now be extinguished.
- Power cycle the unit by unplugging it from the wall outlet for 30 seconds and plugging it back in to refresh the display state.
If That Didn't Work
- Perform a Hard Power Reset: Unplug the Opal 2.0 from the power source and leave it disconnected for at least 10 minutes. This drains the capacitors on the control board and can sometimes clear "stuck" software flags that prevent the button combination from working.
- Run a Full Descaling Cycle: If the manual reset fails, the machine may be requiring a completed cycle. Fill the side tank with a mixture of distilled water and white vinegar (or the GE-recommended citric acid solution). Run the machine through a full cycle of producing ice, then discard that ice. The machine may only trigger the reset once it detects the pump has moved a specific volume of liquid through the system.
- Check for Button Obstructions: Inspect the buttons for any sticky residue or mineral buildup around the edges of the plastic. If one button is registering a "press" slightly after the other due to a sticky switch, the simultaneous command will fail. Clean the edges with a damp microfiber cloth and try the sequence again.
- Verify Tank Connection: If you are using the Side Tank attachment, ensure it is seated perfectly flush against the machine. A poor connection can occasionally cause the logic board to throw generic error lights or prevent the system from entering the "Reset Mode" because it detects a water-source irregularity.

- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Never use bleach or abrasive scrubbing pads on the interior of the ice bin or the evaporator plate; this can strip the food-grade coating and lead to premature pitting and rust.
- Use Distilled Water: To prevent the "Clean" light from returning too quickly and to avoid calcium scale buildup, use distilled water in the side tank rather than tap water.
- Empty the Bin: Always empty the ice bin completely before starting a cleaning cycle to ensure the descaling solution reaches all internal surfaces without being diluted by melting ice.
- Dry the Exterior: When cleaning the unit, avoid spraying water directly onto the control panel, as moisture can seep behind the buttons and cause the "Sonic Ice" or "Light" buttons to short-circuit or malfunction.
