how do you clean the white laminate top without streaks or damaging it? mine looks awful

— asked by Morgan

DIAGNOSIS Streaks and haze come from using glass cleaner, all-purpose sprays, or anything with wax or silicone. They leave a residue that attracts dust and looks terrible on matte laminate.

FIX Keep it simple. Use a microfiber cloth dampened with just warm water. Wipe in the direction of the wood grain pattern (if it has one). For stuck-on grime or marker, use a tiny bit of diluted dish soap (like a drop in a bowl of water) on the cloth, wipe, then immediately follow with a water-only cloth to rinse the soap off. Dry with a separate, clean microfiber cloth.

IF THAT DIDN'T WORK If you already have built-up wax or silicone residue, you need to strip it. Use a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. Spray lightly on the cloth, not the desk, and wipe thoroughly. The acetic acid will cut through the gunk. Follow with a clean water-dampened cloth to neutralize the vinegar, then dry.

HEADS UP Never use abrasive pads, magic erasers, or ammonia-based cleaners. They will permanently dull and scratch the matte finish. The goal is to clean without leaving anything behind.
