Diagnosis
This issue is almost always caused by a "cross-connection" or an airlock resulting from incorrect hose routing. In the CuZn UC-200 system, water must flow in a specific linear path: from your home's cold water shut-off valve, through the filter's inlet, and then back into your existing faucet line. If the hoses are swapped, the water pressure is fighting against the internal filter membrane or flowing back toward the valve, resulting in zero flow at the faucet. Another common culprit is the internal air pocket trapped within the filter canister. Because the UC-200 is a high-density carbon block, it can sometimes "lock" if the system was installed while the lines were dry or if the filter was not primed. You can confirm a routing error by feeling the hoses; if the hose coming from the wall is cold but the hose leading to the faucet is room temperature while the valve is open, the water is not passing through the unit. If both are cold but nothing comes out, you have a blockage or an airlock.
How to Fix It
Follow these exact steps to ensure the flow path is correct and the system is primed:
- Shut off the cold water supply valve completely by turning the handle clockwise until it stops.
- Disconnect both the 3/8" braided hose and the existing house plumbing line from the filter unit.
- Identify the Inlet Port (located on the bottom cap of the unit) and the Outlet Port (located on the top cap).
- Connect the 3/8" braided hose from the cold water shut-off valve directly to the Inlet Port on the bottom cap. Ensure the rubber washer is seated flat against the port to prevent leaks.
- Connect the existing house plumbing line (which leads to your faucet) to the Outlet Port on the top cap.
- Hand-tighten both connections firmly. Use a crescent wrench to provide an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Do not over-tighten, as this can crush the gaskets and cause a slow drip.
- Slowly open the cold water valve. Do not blast it open; open it halfway to allow the canister to fill gradually.
- Open your kitchen faucet to the full "cold" position. You will hear hissing and sputtering for 2-5 minutes; this is the air being purged from the carbon block.
- Allow the water to run for 5 minutes to flush out any residual carbon fines (black specks) before using the water for drinking.
If That Didn't Work
- Check for Kinked Hoses: Inspect the braided lines behind the cabinet wall. Because the UC-200 is a bulky cylinder, it often pushes the hoses against the back of the cabinet. Even a slight 45-degree kink in a 3/8" hose can restrict flow to a trickle or a complete stop. Re-position the unit to ensure the hoses have a natural, sweeping curve.
- Inspect the Shut-off Valve: Some older compression valves have internal washers that disintegrate over time. If the valve was off for a long period during installation, a piece of rubber may have broken loose and clogged the inlet of the filter. Disconnect the hose from the filter inlet and briefly open the valve into a bucket to confirm water is actually leaving the wall.
- Verify Gasket Placement: Remove the nuts from the ports and ensure the black rubber O-rings are not twisted or pinched. If a gasket has slipped out of place, it can act as a plug, completely blocking the water path despite the valve being open.
- Purge the Airlock: If you hear water in the lines but nothing comes out, the filter may be air-locked. Close the faucet, open the cold water valve, wait 30 seconds, then quickly snap the faucet open and shut three times to create a pressure surge that forces the air bubble through the carbon media.
Heads Up
- Avoid Over-tightening: Using a heavy-duty pipe wrench can strip the plastic threads on the UC-200 caps. Stick to a standard adjustable crescent wrench.
- Carbon Fines: Do not be alarmed if the first few gallons of water appear grey or black. This is standard carbon dust and is not a sign of a defective unit.
- Leak Testing: After installation, wrap a piece of dry toilet paper around each connection. If the paper stays dry for 10 minutes, the seal is secure.
- Replacement Cycle: Mark your calendar for 6 months from today. The UC-200 loses efficiency rapidly after its rated gallon capacity, and flow rates will begin to drop as sediment builds up in the inlet.
