The loud grinding or rattling noise in the Milwaukee M18 Fuel Impact Driver (2953-20) typically indicates a catastrophic failure of the internal percussion assembly or the planetary gear set. Unlike the rhythmic "clacking" of normal impact operation, a grinding sound suggests metal-on-metal friction where there should be lubrication or a precise air gap. This most frequently occurs when the hammer spring loses tension or snaps, causing the internal hammer to wobble and strike the anvil off-center, or when the grease has been pushed out of the gear housing due to extreme heat or heavy overloading. Another common culprit is the failure of the needle bearings within the anvil assembly. If a bearing race cracks or a roller flattens, the anvil will vibrate violently at high RPMs, creating a high-pitched rattle that intensifies as you increase the trigger pressure. You can confirm this by running the tool at low speed without a bit installed; if the noise persists and feels like a vibration in the handle rather than a sharp snap at the chuck, the issue is internal mechanical wear rather than a simple debris blockage.
How to Fix It
To resolve this, you must perform a deep cleaning and lubrication of the hammer mechanism. Note that the 2953-20 is a sealed unit, so this requires a partial teardown.
- Remove the M18 battery and any accessory bits from the 1/4" hex chuck.
- Using a T10 Torx driver, remove the casing screws located on the sides and bottom of the tool housing. Carefully pry the two clamshell halves apart, being mindful of the trigger switch wiring.
- Locate the impact hammer assembly at the front of the tool. Inspect the anvil for scoring or deep scratches. If the anvil is pitted, it must be replaced as a complete sub-assembly.

- Reassemble the housing, ensuring the trigger spring is seated correctly in its notch before tightening the T10 screws.
If That Didn't Work
- Replace the Hammer and Anvil Assembly: If the grinding persists after cleaning, the internal hammer has likely developed a flat spot or the anvil is warped. You will need to replace the entire front-end percussion kit. This is a specific mechanical assembly that cannot be "filed down" or sanded; it requires a precision replacement part to maintain the 2,000 in-lbs of torque.
- Inspect the Planetary Gear Set: Check the gears located between the motor and the hammer. If any teeth are chipped or sheared, the tool will make a rhythmic grinding noise every time the gear completes a rotation. If gear damage is found, the gear carrier must be replaced.
- Check for Motor Debris: Occasionally, a small piece of magnetic debris or a loose screw from the housing can migrate into the brushless motor housing. Use a strong magnet to clear the motor vents and check the rotor for any visible scoring or "rubbing" marks against the stator.
- Verify Battery Terminal Tension: In rare cases, a loose battery connection can cause the motor to "stutter" or oscillate rapidly, which sounds like a mechanical rattle. Clean the terminals with isopropyl alcohol and ensure the battery clicks firmly into place.

- Avoid using "general purpose" automotive grease in the impact mechanism; the high centrifugal force of the 2953-20 will sling standard grease out of the gears, leading to rapid overheating and the return of the grinding noise.
