Diagnosis
A sudden loss of torque in your Milwaukee M18 Fuel Impact Driver, despite a full battery, typically points to internal mechanical or electrical failure. The most common culprits are worn carbon brushes or a failing motor windings/armature within the sealed motor assembly. Environmental factors like excessive dust ingress or moisture can also degrade performance over time.
How to Fix It
Since the M18 Fuel 2953 uses a brushless motor, the "motor" is a sealed unit containing the stator and rotor. You cannot service individual brushes. The repair requires replacing the entire motor assembly.
- Obtain a genuine Milwaukee motor assembly (part # 09-80-0450 or similar for your model).
- Disconnect the battery and use a Torx security bit (T20H) to remove the housing screws.
- Carefully separate the clamshell housing, noting wire routing.
- Disconnect the motor leads from the trigger/controller board, unseat the motor, and install the new unit.
- Reassemble, ensuring all seals are properly seated to maintain dust/water resistance.
If That Didn't Work
If a motor replacement doesn't restore power, systematically check other components:
- Battery & Contacts: Test with a different, known-good high-output (HO) M18 battery. Clean the tool's and battery's gold contacts with isopropyl alcohol and a cloth to remove oxidation.
- Controller Board: The electronic speed controller can fail, sending weak signals to the motor. This requires board replacement.
- Impact Mechanism: The hammer and anvil assembly can wear or gum up with old grease. Disassemble the front end, clean components with a degreaser, and apply fresh impact-grade grease.
Heads Up
Using non-High Output batteries or heavily worn older batteries can cause symptoms identical to tool failure. Always begin diagnostics with a fully charged, known-good HO or XC battery to rule out the power source first. For major repairs, consider utilizing Milwaukee's warranty or service network.
